Shortboard size - is weight or ability more important

Just curious how to pick the proper size shortboard for a particular weight and skill level. 've been surfing close to a year and want to go from a 7’8" x 22" x 3" hybrid to either a traditional shortboard or a fish shape. Any recomendations? I’ve been skateboarding for 20 years and snowboarding for 10, so I have decent skill for a person surfing only a year. I weigh 175lbs and am a pretty good paddler. thanks

you didn’t say how tall you are, what kind of waves you surf, or much about your riding style,…but i would go down in size gradually, maybe go with a 6’8" - 6’10", 19-20" wide, 2 1/2" thick…rounded pin or squash, you’re basic no nonsense “big-guy” shortboard. you might even go as small as 6’6" or so, but i’d stick with a width of 19" or more and thickness in the 2 1/2" range. these work good when it gets big too…

I have friends that buy boards from me that out weigh you by a long shot(6’-3",@ 225lbs)and typcically buys 6’-0" thru 6’-4" fishes. Also my younger brother Ray who weighs the same(200+)rides fishes @ or under 6 foot. Now both of these shining examples have surfed over 30 years each and can usually surf circles around guys/gals half there age…refer to my posted response to,“ajl” on ,“board height and size”.Herb.

[wink] ) and am 6’2" 185 and of average/above average skill and I ride a 6’5" x 19.125" x 2.6" standard shortboard almost exclusively. A little more length (say 2-3") should add enough volume to the board to make it paddle a bit better, and be a little more ‘controllabe’ (It’ll still feel VERY loose compared to your hybrid). http://www.kklmachine.com
