i am 6’1", 185 lbs. what would be a good shortboard size? length x width x thickess? something good for head high, hollow conditions…

I’d try a little longer design as close to 7’ as possible. Squash tail tri-fin with the following: 21" wide and 2 3/4" thick.>>> i am 6’1", 185 lbs. what would be a good shortboard size? length x > width x thickess? something good for head high, hollow conditions…

IMHO, you weigh what you weigh, and the volume needs to be commensurate with your weight. Whether you are are short tall wimpy or buff, the board doesn’t know and doesn’t care. Ability and fitness may help you push the envelope of what works for your weight, but it won’t change what it takes to float you.

Yes and no… surfboard volume affects bouyancy only; specific weight of the working fluid times the displaced volume, to be precise. But it could be argued that float is a function of both bouyancy and lift - which is a function of velocity, the square of velocity to be exact, well ok, not exactly, but I don’t think we need to discuss drag, boundary layers and Reynolds number. To sum it up in english, the ability to paddle greatly affects what type of board you can get away riding (and what kind of break your riding, conditions…) I agree, buff and lanky have nothing to do with it. I’m kind of skinny, but I can paddle circles around my Marine friend who is just learning to surf, yet I can keep even close to him on the benchpress. My roomate is also just learning to surf, he’s about my size and build, but can’t ride my shortboard or my 6’7" HP. To sum up my point, I think paddle ability is more than just being able to push the envelope, if you ride a quick break (or little mushers like here in the summer in Newport Beach)it can completly open up (or close out) new sizes and shapes for you.

i am 6’1", 185 lbs. what would be a good shortboard size? length x > width x thickess? something good for head high, hollow conditions… Okay here i read so much talk about what would be right for a person 185 6’1". Well it’s got to do with your level of surfing. If you can go out and rip a nice round house back off the lip to a dub pump off the bottom to air grabing a rail and stick it well “ANYTHING” works to a point? I have a friend who went to CR with me a few years ago and broke all his boards and still had a few weeks to go so he bought my 5’9" x 18 3/4 x 2 3/8 C5 nugget it had a 13" nose with a 14 1/4 tail he is 6’2" 185 to. his every day board is 6’1" x 18 1/4x 2 3/16 pop out surftech sorry to say. The thing is you can ride small if your fast to your feet and can paddle like a pro… Here in Washington we are in 654’s and 543 this time of the year and we all still ride the same boards that we would in hawaii even with 15 lb’s of wet rubber. I rode a kids TDK 5’8" x 17 3/4 x 2 1/8 I weigh 165 and i’m 5’ 9" but i like 6’2 so who knows what’s the right short board for you. Only you know what your ready for…
