Should I cut tail down (Pic)

I am building a board that I hope to learn t surf on.

I have not been able to copy a board so I am going by

what I read here and pictures on the net. I am getting ready to

glass and I am having doubts about the tail. I have posted pictures

and would love some input from anyone out there. I feel that the tail

is a little sharp and to thin. Should I cut along the dotted line.

The board is 7" 10’’ x 20.5" x 2 3/4. I need the board to catch

waves easily since I hope to learn on it.

Marke, You’ve got plenty of foam for wave catching. Your dotted line looks like it follows the lines of the planshape a little better. If you cut the tail down, I think it would be more for a smoother flow of lines than for anything else. Doug

how wide is the board 1 foot in from each end?

Nose width = nose - 12"

Tail width = tail - 12"

What is your tail width at 3" and at 6".

how much would your tail width (3",6",12") change if you cut it off like you are thinking about?

b.t.w. it looks pretty good to me. It is not a real pointy pin tail.

Both my longboards (9’0" and 10’6") have squared off tails.

The 9er I think is 5.5" and the 10’6er is 4.5-4.75" wide at the very end.

Your tail taper looks pretty good.

looks like fun

nose width is 17.5". tail width is 15".

( 3", 6" ,12’) at the moment is 8", 11" 15".

If I cut along the line I will have 10.25", 13" 16.25".

What do you think about the thickness at the tail, it is 3/4" at

the very end without the glass.

I agree with Doug, looks like you have plenty of foam there.

I think cutting the tail would be for perferred shape/flow.

sounds like a good board to learn on

how tall/heavy are you?

anyone else have thoughts on tail shape for a learner board?

5’ 6" and 135lb, hope it doesn’t get to windy or I will blow of the board.

Your shape looks quite good to me. I’d leave it the way it is. By reshaping the tail to the template pictured, the increase in the tail measurement 12" up may be too wide. By the way, what type of fin set up are you planning on using?

for a first board, and “learning” to surf on, that is a really nice shape. I would leave the tail, as cutting it would mean reconsideration of thickness and rocker also. looks good!!! good luck and have fun.

I am thinking of going with a single fin glassed on. I am nervous about a finbox because I have an EPS core and would have to set it with epoxy adhesive. I am worried about poly getting past the box into the blank

on my hot coat. A thruster set up would be more work and more chance

of mistakes. What do you think and what would be a good size finfor my board?.
