Show us your home-made fins ....

Some spares or ??

Just add:very slight foiling and we’re good to go. Then water,

I made this out of a bunch of mahogany scraps I had laying around for a couple of years before I could figure out what to do with them. I had to scrimp for every square inch of wood to have enough For example, before I glued anything together, I made all my cuts with an exacto knife so I wouldn’t waste the kerf. Als, I built a jig so i could glue up the pieces pretty much as you see them and not have to waste any wood chopping off the little triangles at the ends. Fortunately, I still didn’t have quite enough so I had to augment with a giant paint stir stick from home depot. Now if I just had a board to put it on…

twinzer mains . future box . before and after acrylic spray .

They look good Pico, good foiling and bases!

thanks nocean, I found some valuable advice in the ARCHIVES — “foil your fins!” Seems to work pretty well.

Beech and Redwood

Here’s a set of fins I’ve recently produced for a board I’ve just finished - they’re hand foiled from birch ply - went quite thick with the foil to aid turning - obviously thats slightly at the expense of speed - primed with epoxy then laid up each side with 3 layers of 4oz cloth. I used 3 full patches each side to glass them on (along with the usual rope) so they have a total of 6 layers each side. The decals are laser etched into the timber…just for a bit of detail!

.... this thread is ALIVE !

Pico ,

I love the colour , shape , and foil , mate  !!

was it hard getting the 'Futures'  angle into the panel ?   how did you do it ?

and ....

cutting the grooves , for the screws ...what did you use ?

" I found some valuable advice in the ARCHIVES --- " foil your fins ! "    Seems to work pretty well."

.....  do you have the "  link  " , please ?

  cheers ,  mate !

  ben

Hey Ben, thanks for the kudos. To get the base anlge wasn’t too difficult only because the twinzer doesn’t have much cant. To achieve this I added the 5 sheets of 6 oz white opaque after the 30 some sheets of blue/green tints which seemed thick enough when visually compared to a future base. then I sanded the white opaque off at the angle I wanted, and matched the other side. Not super technical but it worked fine.

The screw doesn’t need to thread in. it just needs a little lip to hold onto. once all was foiled etc, I clamped my fin with a future fin and drilled out the groove on the back and the place for the grub screw, finish sanding and testing and viola, perfect fit. I was really surprised at how well it worked and how easy it actually was.

Beautiful layup swerfle!  I've also noticed that some of my best looking fins came from scraps/cutoffs and a little creativity.  Really liking some of these assymetric layups on these last couple pages.

Also -great job on those glass fins Pico.  They look well foiled and the base transitions are super clean!  Nice!

THOSE are the ones right there!!!

Bitchin’!

still working on foiling and fitting my slot keels rocket fish template for future base. all the files are out. dig em ben?

wow

that's some nice creativity , right there , Pico !

so , please tell ...

HOW did you cut out the slot ?

what do you foil it with , just files ?

what is the idea of the slot , is it for flex / 'twang  ' ?

I think windsurfer fins have been 'slotted' at times too, and big single fins on some boards occassionally , over the years ?

I'll be really interested to hear your feedback on how they GO,  mate !

I reckon YOU could do some "my fin tinkerings "  and "board and fin setups test ride " threads , too ?

cheers mate ,   [keep the experimenting coming , eh ?!  You do nice work !]

  ben

hey Ben,

The slot mimics the dynamics of the twinzer set up. I have yet to test ride, but to be honest I feel like I never can do a good test review unless things go horribly wrong. The template was taken from a Freddie Grosskruetz fish. Ed is doing a copy and I’m making the fins. The set is a glass on, so the slot is cut with a jigsaw and then foiled at an angle through the slot. My set is for a future base, so I used a drill and drilled a big hole at the base and a much smaller one at the top of the slot. I then used the jigsaw to cut from one drilled hole to the other. Labor intensive compared to other fins, but I gottta try em! The foiling of the front of the fin( before the slot) creates the cant angle like used in a twinzer. Better than making fins and putting more plugs in your keel fish or twin fin.

here are a couple of half moon / keels that i made for a mini sim (just after attaching the halo - pre final foiling)

cheers

Thanks Camplus. That fin is basically made of mahogany popsicle sticks, and I couldn’t be happier with the layup. I started with about 40 pieces of 2.5" x 7" x 1/16" mahogany which I sliced into thirds lengthwise with an x-acto. I copied the template shape from one on a beloved Christensen log, but when I found I didn’t have enough mahogany to fill out the template (and knowing a halo was pretty much out of the question because I’m junk at glassing) I decided to improvise with some stir stick and came up with this. Unfortunately, I find that the layers in plywood fins really helps me get a good foil. No layers in this, so as you can see, the foil isn’t perfect.

PS, Those black/burl fins you posted are downright stunning. first class.

junk at attaching images too…

Quad set

so, pico, howd they go? im super curious!
i just finished a twinny and the fins are a little big. depending on your ride report (and mine) im thinking of trying this out.

anyone else got any idea?
do you think that design will make for a looser fin (with less area). or only provide a more fluent ride?

i may get pics up of my stuff but my internet is supper slow, im a lazy bastard and dont really see myself providing much input into a already well rounded with various input, site.

(in case anyones wondering why im on the sidelines).

mickp,

still dry, holidays and such. i will do my best to report back asap.
