Any of you surf-historians know when shapers first began signing their names on their surfboards? Why are shapers compelled to add their signature to a finished shape? Do the glassers, sanders, etc. have to right to sign their names right along side the shaper’s autograph?

I add everybodys name,in ink, who had a hand in the artistic development of my surfboards, in the same line as mine, with the series number, and the number in ten. Some companies wouldn’t allow the shapers to sign their names. Next thing the shaper would be off making his own boards. How would that be? These companies would usually use first and last initials in front of a serial number. In the days of Dyno(in the 70’s), they could care less if the customer knew who the shaper was. We put a serial number on it and that was it. SB

I saw him last weekend in all his glory at the Arden Taylor Memorial contest at California St. in Ventura. I didn’t stay for the results. He’s still moving a million miles an hour. He looks fine, and so does his girlfriend. …
