I just saw this silicon in a spray can stuff that is used to free up zippers. But it’s also used to reduce friction and says it won’t wash off, so do you think if I bought some and sprayed it on the bottom of my board, the board would go faster? Would I keep it off the rails and fins?
Save it for your wetsuit zippers. You’ll be bouncing your board off the pavement if you put it on. Also, if you ding it where it was sprayed, it will be hell to do a repair. If you really think that you need a slick bottom, then compound polish it and apply a non-silicone car wax. Don’t do the rails.
i think there is no need to spray it on the bottom of your board. just practice pumping, bottom turn and get speed out of your surfing that´s the way to go
Results, however, may be increased spinout, you dropping the board, the board becomes slower due to mixed medium, and it attracts dirt or grime from the sea.
Or not.
If you think or suspect your board is too slow, you should learn how to surf first.
My current everyday board has at least 50 globs of wax on the tail bottom, and it’s fast enough.
Silicon spray.thats a good one, hey…anyone ever use Rain-X on their board? I bet bet board would ride 2" above the water. that stuff is amazing on car windows when it raining you don’t even need the wipers.
silicon oil is not a good thing. It has caused me some real pains in the butt. It will not stay where you put it and nothing will stick to it. Which means if you put in on one of your boards and need to repair it will will have a real pain. Talk to the car painters about the silicon car waxes that they use on cars, and about how much trouble they have getting it off before the repaint a car. It will not make your board slicker, just stickier.
I asked the same question a month or so ago, there was a thread about what surfaces were faster, as I remember, someone had tried it, and said they thought it was faster, but wore off quickly. I will say that stuff is really cool on a car winshield in a heavy rain, no wipers needed, just don’t start tripping out on the neat streaky motion while driving! There was an interesting debate about hydrophobic / hydrophilic surfaces, RainX would definitely fall in the former category.
Wells…I wonder if salt water washes it off sooner than rain water? It seems to last about 3 month on the windshield… Rain-x work by filling in microscopic holes in glass and does not contain any wax or oil. . if we ever get any waves again I will give it a try…
Dunno…you know, I bet that idea had popped into my head nearly a year ago, Iv’e thought about it a dozen times, my rain-x is in my truck mere inches from where I put my board, but I just haven’t tried it… I think I’ll give it a shot too…let’s compare notes, shall we? I suppose I’ll clean the bottom first, refresh my 1200 grit sand surface (epoxy) and shoot on a coat…
