Is it me who doesn’t understand well english or Bill Bahne, “President & Owner of Fins Unlimited and Chairman of SIMA Board Builders Special Interest Group” strongly recommends using STYROFOAM ???
Isn’t Styrofoam dow’s brand name for EXTRUDED polystyrene ? Would that mean that the “Chairman of SIMA Board Builders Special Interest Group” doesn’t have a clue about what EPS and XPS are and how they differ ???
if you have a close look , sima is closely affiliated with glass manufacturers …
if there is no surfboard industry , there is no one buying fabric , its the one thing that is used in both p/u p/e and epoxy/eps …
dig a little deeper , many more people have a vested interest in keeping some sort of domestic surfboard industry alive …so it only makes sense to suggest anything that will have any remote chance of keeping people in business …
i can honestly say if i was the average customer going to buy a traditional p/u brand that had recently switched to epoxy/eps or xtr , i would be thinking twice about what i would end up with …
i reckon theres going to many more decisions and comments getting thrown around that havnt been thoroughly thought through (was that a tongue twister ) …
all because there is still some sort of panic going on …
i dono whats going on over there , but gregs phone is always engaged and his emails are coming back in capitals , so it must be a mad house over there …

Hi Bert,
SIMA does not have any ties with Glass Manufacturers. I’m not sure if you know who or what SIMA is.
ok glass distributors then , is more to the point …
um?, SIMA , its when you slow your cooking down…
no , its when you see your mother …
or it could be when you get sick of seeing your mother …
kel , can you tell me who sits on the commitee of SIMA and what there day jobs are ???
then tell me who is connected with what businesses and in whos interests it is for the surfboard industry to stay alive …
and then come back and tell me that i dont know what sima is …
EURO-SIMA just paid us 1000 euros for having one of the most enviromentally responsible and non toxic ways of producing surfboards , if only i knew who gave us the money ???
regards
BERT
SIMA is mostly made up of industry giants and mostly looks out for industry giants. I can’t see where they have done much to help the little guy in the surf industry other than send us letters inviting us to join them at their meeting in Mexico.
I like the concept, but the Quiksilvers of the world have most of the power in these types of groups.
Local guilds are a way better way IMO. No large organization is going to know whats best for the majority of it’s members.
Like Surfrider, it’s mostly a waste of time. Of course, I am open to anyone that can show me anything of consiquence either organization has accomplished.
I like Bill Bahne though. Those guys make some great fins.

Bert,
In the U.S. SIMA is the Surfing Industry Manufacturers Association…not the Surfboard industry. Basically it’s the garment and accessory trade. Their interest in actual surfboards has to do with reatail display and accessory validation - IMHO. There recently is a splinter group for board manufacturers - I don’t actually recall if they are affiliated or not. For SIMA think Rusty and CI as the surfboard representatives. Don’t know about this newer wrinkle.
It is, of course, in the best interest of the garment and acessory businesses to still have people actually surf and the surfboard is the token of that funky soul they sell.
