Value: Priceless Laird Hamilton Tribute Package Billy Hamilton has been shaping for 35 years, and of all the boards he has shaped, he is most proud of his “firsts.” He shaped Andy and Bruce Irons’ first boards and, of course, his son Laird’s first board. In 1968 he shaped his first Waimea gun for Ricky Gregg. Other proud “firsts” include a 10’ solid balsa gun for Laird in 1992, which he first started towing in, and the gun Laird rode on the epic day at Teahopu’u on August 17, 2000. To commemorate that day at Teahopu’u and all of Laird’s incredible accomplishments, Billy has hand shaped replica of the tow-in gun Laird rode on August 17. The board is made from a Balsa tree grown and harvested in Kauai, redwood from Northern California and albesia (African Mahogany). It has three removable, laminated wood fins and laminated wood wall hangers. A master carver has produced a koa wood plaque portraying a stylized face in the tradition of a Tahitian tattoo, which has been inlayed into the deck. The board is accompanied by a framed 3’ x 5’ giclee of a commissioned painting by Kauai artist Lee Clark of Laird on a massive Tahiti wave. Value: Priceless Laird Hamilton Tribute Package Billy Hamilton has been shaping for 35 years, and of all the boards he has shaped, he is most proud of his “firsts.” He shaped Andy and Bruce Irons’ first boards and, of course, his son Laird’s first board. In 1968 he shaped his first Waimea gun for Ricky Gregg. Other proud “firsts” include a 10’ solid balsa gun for Laird in 1992, which he first started towing in, and the gun Laird rode on the epic day at Teahopu’u on August 17, 2000. To commemorate that day at Teahopu’u and all of Laird’s incredible accomplishments, Billy has hand shaped replica of the tow-in gun Laird rode on August 17. The board is made from a Balsa tree grown and harvested in Kauai, redwood from Northern California and albesia (African Mahogany). The board went for a top bid of $3,500 and was purchased by Paul Naude, the CEO of Billabong USA and a die-hard surfboard collector. In other words, it went to avid surfer, collector and will be appreciated. He’s also promising to surf on it, not just put it in a stand!

Hey Paul, I glad someone with some clout in the surf industry ended up with you hollow. It’s great that it’s going to get some exercize occassionally. One always has hopes that a work intended to perform does more than hang on the wall. I’m sure the ball was quite a social function and that there were many good contacts made there. The only thing they can write off is the amount over the appraised value. So if a board is appraised at $3,500 and someone purchases it for $4,000, they can write off $500. It’s the donor that writes off the most as they can claim the entire value of the donated item…you listening Paul?
