simmons fin placement

Hey guys i just shaped a “simmons” 6’3’’ x 22 1/2’’ x 3’’ with wing tail. It also has a channel (photos in progress).

I wanna put keel fins and side bites and maybe in the future a 8,5’’ fin box.

Now the question is about the keel fins dimesions, the placement  and the inclination of them.

I was thinking of a 4º-5º inclination of keels and 6º of side bites.

Now the placement of keels is the problem because of the channel. The keels will be homemade and will have FCS system with 3 plugs.

I would leave out the box too…otherwise, looks sweet…

thank you johnmellor.

It’s PU homemade blank.

About the center box it’s just an option, for the moment i’ll put just 4 plugs in each side.

**johnmellor **- is this the placement you’re thinking?

I don't know what the placement is on a real MiniSimmons but if it were mine?  I'd scrap the twinzer placement and reposition the keels so the rear plugs are about even with where the forward plugs are now.  I'd line up the keels where the sidebites are now.  I'd also put the sidebite plugs in the rear position... maybe about where the middle keel plugs are now.  I'd also wait to see how it rode with the twin/quad layout before adding the weight of a center box.  You might not need it.

If the blank if lightweight EPS you might consider adding high density foam inserts at the plug sites or just buy the FCS plugs with the surrounding foam already built in.

ok then… box out, just keels and side bites

hi colin !

would you MAINLY be riding it as a twin keel , firstly ?

I ask , because if it  IS to be a quad-mostly setup , you might need to make a second set of much smaller keels [or twin FINS , even?] for the quad option , while still making the keels for the twin keel option , too , perhaps ?

(these are only my thoughts , though ...others will vary , no doubt ?! ... )

  cheers mate !

  ben

my 2 cents, rode a 5.10x23x3,quad.now a 6.0x22.5x3,twin fins, glassed on.much prefer the twin fin for what size wave i use the board on,only up to head high, mostly waist to shoulder, waves that i would longboard with a log…twinnie is looser, and faster  if I don’t pump it,just riding the section.if pumping, the quad definitely adds more speed,or feels that way to me.

put the twinnies up 4"

heres the numbers that I use on my simmons-esque shapes:

trailing edge of keel ~ 4inches up from tail

trailing edge of keel 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" inch from the radius of the rail

keels PARALLEL to stringer (dead straight, no toe! this is important)

no cant (straight up and down)

keels on a simmons should be double foiled and set up like I mentioned above. In my experience toed-in single foiled keels DO NOT work on such a wide planshape. Straight, parallel keels are what gives the shape speed and drive. Your mileage may vary, especially cause you have added a wing.

in the end it’ll be the next fin setup:

Keels fcs system + concave side bites+10cm knubster (at 8cm from tail)

....heehee , Col !    :)

I'm thinking that one back plug will become TWO ,  somewhere along the line , as the curiousity of "how would this surf as a THRUSTER ??!! "  gets the better of you , Col ?

but , maybe I'm just 'projecting' ?! [ie: I know it would , for ME !]

 cheers mate !

 ben

Yeah maybe u’re right Ben, but I have just two center plugs and one’s for the go pro :)))). the nearest surf shop is about 60-70km so it’s not worth to

Maybe after a while i’ll make another hole for a second center plug .

it’ll definitely surf better than my 6’ x 18’’ x 2 1/4’’ shortboard, whit the summer shity waves we have here.

I’ll make a short movie of my first day with this board.

good on ya

how long till the board is finished , you reckon ?

  and

could you not put two plugs for the keels , instead of three ?

eg:

zrescutaways5.jpg

that way , you would have two extra plugs , for ....

one for go pro on the tail , and one for second back fin plug ....

Plan B ...

give 'go pro' to a mate , to swim out and take footage of you from the inside / shoulder ...

one go pro plug on the nose / one on the tail [pole cam]

or , mount the 'go pro'  on your arm ....
