Simmons vs. Longboard

After some great help from a few of you out there I still cannot decide on the length of my next simmons build. I want a fast paddle and longboard-ish bouyancy. Dimensions are 8’ x 20 1/2 x 24 x 18 x 3 1/2. The board will be my first epoxy can I squeeze it down any further in length but still give it that 10’ long feel? Thank you for the help.

Thats a lot of volume. I’ve done a few Full Simms boards that paddle really well and can catch micro waves. The wide tail wants to slide out on steeper waves over chest high. I put a wing in the tail to step it down which helped a lot. Ride them as a twin keel plus trailer fin. 7’10 x 17.75" x 23" x 17.68" x 3.125".

anyone?

Kevin,

I mostly ride Florida waves chest high and plan to make it a quad+1 probox. The reasonfor all the volume is that I weigh around 250+ year round so I like big boards. Do you still think I should pull in the dimensions to what you had stated?

Huck,

I’ve been reading that post along with others for months now and it is a really good one with some great designs and information. A few of my ideas came from there and some conversations with “Ace”

8-4

later I added a center fin box…

my only issue is that I have only one of these…and it lives in Mex.

need one from Cali.

Fwiw, Rich Harbour told us that in general:

1/8" thickness = 1/2" width = 3-4" in length

Does that mean an 8’ board to approximate the float and paddle of a 10’er, you could make up one foot by adding 1/2" in thickness and make up another foot by adding 1.5" in width? Theoretically, if similar in rocker and outline.

At your size you can go up in length for sure. Keep the tail pulled in with a wing and it will ride much better.

In theory this may be possible to get similar results? My experience is quite limited compared to many of you out there I merely am attempting to compensate as much as possible in my design. The outline seems right to me I do my designs based primarily on feel and my “intuition” for better or worse.

Kevin,

What exactly do you mean by “wing” in the tail? Are you referring to the “steps” commonly seen on “fish” type boards? I have never seen these on a simmons style board.

All boards by John Cherry

I have thrown some of this up before on other threads so it may be a repost, but who cares, just thought you might like to see them

The white opaque board is mine, a Simm-21, it is 7’2, I am soon to be 43 yrs old, 210 pounds, live in FL and can surf this 7’2 in what we call “FL longboard waves”…literally knee/thigh high, and glides and trims super nice, and I have no problem doing nice drawn out turns, floaters, etc…

The other pics are just some JC shared w me, that is his brother holding what JC refers to as a “Pelican”… a long Simm-21

JC makes these in all sizes from 5 feet range to I think 9-10 feet range

you will see more here on his blog:

I do not shape, so I cannot tell you a bunch of technicalities about the board, only what I can from owning and riding them, I have owned 2 Simm-21.

I have thought to ask JC to add a step/wing as has been suggested by Spirare in this thread, but my supply of dough is finite.

hope you enjoy the pics

Yes, wing is the same as a step. The board on the left is a 7’10" Full Simm with a wing in the tail.

All those look great thanks for the inspiration.
