single concave theory

me again, having watched a guy surf a great looking single fin at the local beach with style n grace in pretty aveage conditions i chatted in the car park and had a look at his board , it was a 7 foot single fin shaped buy brett munro of byron bay , but had the words single concave theory written on the stringer after the dimentions, so a short conversation started. the board seemed very fluid and catched mushy waves with ease. Any body got more input to this bottom design?

The name says it all. One concave running the length of the board.  One benefit is that you get to have two rocker profiles in one board. The outside rail rocker should give you the curve should aid you in turning when the Board is on the rail.  The inner concave is a flatter rocker profile that will allow for faster paddling and speed down the line. Sounds simple.  Getting the right blend of curves in any board is hard. adding more curves is even harder.

Well put Artz!

Here’s a thread with a vid where Maurice Cole explains, take note when he puts the straight edge across the board at 45deg -> http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/single-concave-designs-maurice-cole

Well, a single concave creates lift I’m pretty sure… that’s why they feel lively compared to a flat bottom board… also, I’ve heard they can feel “tracky” , but in my ltd exp w concave bottoms ill say I have noticed it does feel tracky but the board I test rode had Brewer rails so it was not tracky in a bad sense… the one I rode had a shallow single starting maybe eighteen or twenty inches down from nose tip… and it’s deepest point was just in front of fin… out back it was kinda flat but still had a tad o concave… board worked great tho! Anyhow, the tracky feeling maybe the residue of the water being “channeled” under board… maybe even causing lift and a bit o drag but… some folk’s luv em! Hope this helps.
