Single fin advice wanted

Hey Swaycrew, I just bought a 5’11" Cheyne Horan Lazor Zap, looking for the best fin to put in it. I have a “winged keel”(starfin), and recently was told through a friend that Geoff McCoy believes it to be the wrong fin for the board. Any input out there?

Try it !!

Some peeps do just fine with a 10" longboard fin.

Some peeps actually turn hard enough to need a 9.5 winged fin.

Some peeps get around the problem by using 5" sides and 8" center fin.

Do what works for you !!

Hey junkie, try and find some old mag pics and see what fin was being used. Generally they were about 9" depth and rake and really banana like.

I saw several and rode similar boards for a while, and that style fin worked well.

I used a wing fin and didn’t like it, for a few reasons. Performance wise it was too pivoty, being such a big, vertical fin. Also the wings seemed to give me too much lift, especially on a zap, but I’m a lightweight too.

The biggest hassle was the leash catching on it, too many times.

Email Geoff McCoy. Let us know what he says.

Random thoughts on trial and error for L-Zap, from my own quiver of fins: Wingnut Long Rake, Starfin, McCoy Gullwing, Farberow Flex.

Check out solosurfer.com and ask, he’s familiar with the Zap.
