single fin love

I am fully single fin hooked!

basically i have allways been riding thruster and quad shortboards. iv also had a little play on a twin and a longboard in my time of surfing but only recently shaped myself a very retro style single fin shortboard with a slightly modern twist. i instantly fell in love! after 3 or 4 surfs i had lost the desire to make the board snap with tight turn and found new styles. i know it sounds hippyish but i really feel like im surfing the wave now rather than surfing the board.

anyone sharing the love right now? would be nice to see some pics and here some feedback

For me 6’6" x 21’ x 3".

Stringerless.

Vee bottom. Rail channels to thin rails.Nine days of cutting, gluing, shaping (by hand of course) laminating and sanding.

Arctic foam donor blank.

Black glue lines.

One more of my “Disect Series”. 12 peices total. No glue lines on rail. Perimiter foam.

Black pigment deck and rails.

Carbon for box strength.

Red pinline.

Looking for a 71/2" full base single fin to finish. (A red one).

Can’t wait to surf!

You have had a glimpse of the true essence of what surfing really is.    Larger waves simply magnify it.       Bigger, is in fact better.

Stay on that path, great rewards lay ahead of you.

I love my singles

“FELL THE WAVE” for sure with this combo…

Nice one Ace. That thing looks fun!

I been building more singles lately.

Bill summed it up. He knows what’s up.

Singles seem to be “in” now.

We’ve always known that right?

I’m in the process of gluing up a mid-6’ single for myself.

Ride a hollow wood board with a single fin and really feel the wave…

My go to when it’s big, thanks Bill

That green one is a beauty Barry!

Back on a McCoy again for another dose of McCoy-itis.

This board likes the pocket and top to bottom surfing.

Hi pidge,

can you post an image of the board you shaped?

Sweet board there mate!

hey tjrm I have one of those too, thanks to kensurf.  Its just so pretty I hate to take it out, LOL.

yes, loving these rides!!

i am going to be making a hollow wooden board some time this year so really looking foward to seing how well that goes. single fins are nearly never seen where i surf and that actual make me love it more. allthough i would like to see some other single riders trimming with big grins on there face’s

i put pics up on here…http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/pin-tail-or-no-pin-tail

i will get a finnished pic up with the fin in aswell. im also goin to be instaling a longboard box into a round tail 5 6" i made to see how that feels in comparison to the pin

Is the conversion of a thruster to a single fin an easy process. Aka, routing out a futures box and dropping a fin box in? I’ve never ridden a single fin, but I’ve got a board with a rather retro outline but whoever ordered it had it made as a thruster. I’ll see if I can get a picture, but it might go well as a single. 6’4"x 22 x like 3" thick, diamond tail. 15" at 1’ from tail and probably 15" at 1’ from the nose too. Very flat rocker, in fact i wish the nose was a bit more flipped up.

Not hard to convert.  In fact, it is said that the thruster grew out of the no-nose designs that Cheyne Horan was riding - as a single-fin.

Also, you don’t need to route out the futures box.  Instead, leave it and add a single box in front of it.  You’ll see what I’m talking about here (hoping the link works):

i have been riding my pin with a 9" fin but just got myself a 7 to try out and its like riding a compleatly diferent board. its given it so much performance with much tighter snappy turns. i knew it would get looser but never anticipated that much of a diference. when the wave face is steep it doesnt get too tight and i feel it start sliding…which i love! i can see much more fun to be had with singles

Sweet looking board Barry, yet again!!!

how far up are you guys placing your single fins on boards says 6’6’ and under
