Hey guys I’m putting a single fin box into this board. This thing was made from an old board that I stripped, reshaped/glassed. It’s a 7-0 x 22" wide stretched out mini simm shape. Right now it has a twin setup (futures, rasta keels) it works ok but I think my twin placement, toe in is a bit off. Anyway this thing is for small waves, just want to bring back a little glide with the single fin. I’ve got a 10" fins unlimited box, any suggestions where to put it, also what size type of fin to go with?
Hey Johnny...Bill T taught us a cool "rule-of-thumb" for single-fin placement at one of his workshops. I describe it (along with funky drawing) on my blog http://tp4surf.blogspot.com/2010/09/fin-placement-single-fins.html. This usually ends up to be about 8.5" from tail to trailing-edge of fin on a board with tail width of 14.5" -15.5" placement. (Critical factors are depth of fin and width of tail.) Then, once board is rideable, you fine-tune placement by moving fin up or back in 1/4-inch increments until satisfied with ride. When marking box placement, you need to allow for this adjustment space, so I use this same method to estimate where the center of my initial fin placement will be, and then measure 5.25" back to mark placement of 10.5" box. This is usually ends up to be 5.5"-6" up from tail. The method autommatically accounts for tail shape.
Thanks Thomas that helps big time, I appreciate it!
