single or 2+1

Hi,

My son (aged 11) is looking to buy his first longboard and is unsure what fin set up he should go for?  He’s tried a few boards mostly 2+1 (Stephen Slater and an In the pink).

He’ll be surfing it on anything up to head high.

Any suggestions on this would be great.

If he’s primarily surfing waves suited for nose riding, single fin.

If surfing waves with more turns then tip,  2+1.

Either way, a LB should be in every kids quiver, teaches them about the Glide.

I like the versatility of a 2+1 set up.  Ride single or as a 2+1.

I ride single fin longboards. Longboards do not need to have nose concave…or side bite fins…

When the day comes to sell your longboard it better be a “big name” board if it is a single fin…not a board from a hack like me…with no nose concave…and lots of belly.

…and because your board will not be a Bing or Velzy it needs to have side bites and nose concave…because most people do not understand rocker or nose concave or whatever…

Buy your 11 year old son a popular brand surfboard with a 2+1  set up. A board with resale value. A board with nose concave…Because 11 year olds become 15 year olds very fast…and if he’s still surfing at 15 he won’t be riding the board you bought him when he was 11…

oh yeah…one more thing…most 2+1 boards have removeable fins…so what’s stoping you from taking out the side fins?..and riding it as a single…
