Singlefin Finbox Replacement

Hey.

Hope Everyone’s doing well.

I recently finished a modern/retro single-fin that’s my best board to date (I’ve only done about 15 of them). But now, a few days after I thought I was finished, a problem’s popped out… little balls and bubbles of weak, soft resin have made there way to the surface around the corners of the finbox. In so doing, they’ve pushed up a side of the singlefin’s box, making the fin crooked.

I’m going to route out the box and put in a new one. The crookedness isn’t too, too bad, but I can’t let the old box sit there knowing how weak the resin is.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be next to impossible taking out the box without tearing some of the foam out with it, though, which will throw off the second box’s being level, I think. My question is, when I take out the old box, what do I do to ensure that the 2nd box I put in will have a level base?

Also, I used epoxy resin for the box, and I believe I used the appropriate mixture ratio… for a lamination or sanding coat: are there special considerations when using an epoxy resin for fin boxes?

The ruining of my best board has been… frustrating, so any help would be more than appreciated.

Thanks.

I just had to do this to a new board a couple months back…here’s what I did…Route it out and make sure that it is a hair deeper and wider and longer than the first route job in order to get all the resin and glass out and leave foam. The boxes I set have little triangle tabs that rest on the outside of the route hole so the box sits level and doesn’t go to deep in the routed hole.

don’t know 'bout epoxy so someone else could be of better help.

good luck

Thanks astevens. That’s a good idea. Even if there are some rough spots, that sounds like it will minimize the danger quite a bit. Thanks for the help.
