Skate Photo For Herb

Hi Herb

I got this skateboard brand new in 1980 or 1981 as a birthday gift !!!

Ray

When’s your B-day Ray.

Got the same deck(approx)… handbuilt by me, Flat w/ kick… glassed on both sides…colors. glitter. glossed and polished.

If you want it …it’s yours.

I have one for Rhino too…My last two custom decks…(Rhino’s is different in build).

Just money is tight right now…if you guys want them …we can set-up something I’m sure.

Hi Herb,

How you doing? I hope you’re feeling OK. I thought I’d show you something. I bought a Santa Cruise deck way back when (pre 80’s) Bernie was living in Seattle. I was a surf/skate nazi back then.

My brother in law gave me the other board, a Duke Kahanamoku model with hard clay wheels.

I heven’t riden this thing for about 18 years, but before that I rode it to work all the time because I worked about 200 yards away from where I lived.

Enjoy, Harry

The Santa Cruz deck is 76-77 era epoxy/fiberglass top and bottom w/ a 1/4" maple core. The Duke board was made by the Nash company ,I believe, around 63-65.

The plastic base plates on the trucks of the SC are the early Bennett Hi-jackers trucks…if they’re intact w/o cracks, etc.,they are worth a small fortune. The tops look to be ACS not Bennetts(picture is not very clear). The wheels on that particular board are the early Sims Comps or a knock-off/back-doored of the same.

Thanks for sharing that bit of time travel with us.Herb

Speaking of skate photos and Herb…

Pioneer.

Herb, I got an old board that was my uncles back in the 70’s, i will post it some time think you could give me a hostory lesson on it?

a genuine duke! you are a lucky man.

Great stuff Ray and SC!!!

These boards should be in a Museum for everyone to see, the Duke would be worth a fortune, I’ve seen one somewhere on the web once before, hope your home insurance cover is up there…

Anyone got piccies of their old boards?

Golden Breed, fibreglass deck

is that you hicksy? did you make it?

Yeah, that’s me in the air, and I made it…

What you don’t see is a board resting up against Tim on the ground and the board I took off from…

We used to jump over car bonnets like that too, taking off from one board and landing on another…

Tim and I used to do demos in shopping centres in the late 70’s doing all sorts of crazy stunts, high jumps taking off and landing on the same board, riding 4 boards on top of each other…fun times…

Anytime Rider…WELL Soooo…much for my silence stuff.I was suppose to go this weekend to mex. for my tx follow-up,but I re-scheduled it for a few weeks later.I think this dog,“Koa” will help me heal just the same…I feel better by the minute…he’s so Cute and Huge ! and finally another male in this all female band o household.I know I’m still going(to mex for my chemo)…it’s a long hard road to cross…that’s foresure.

Herb, you’re amazing. In the summer of 1976 I stayed with Bernie while he went through the summer session at UW. I bought that deck at a shop called ride-on on University Ave. The trucks are Bennett high-jackers. I think I had to replace the original plates. I’d have to check, and I already put them back in storage. I thought the wheels were called Stokers, but they have “Super Skate 4” molded in on the sides. I also have orange juice, and cadillac wheels (the loose bearing type). Funny how we used to have wheels that were flat and now they are oval. I put a spacer in between the trucks and the board to keep it from hitting the wheels on hard turns. I used to like to ride the board like a surfboard pumping it from side to side and use the flex to get it to accelerate out of each turn. I guess that’s much like riding a thruster these days. For jumping curbs or catching a little air, I always liked my solid boards. I broke my favorite board (one that Bernie made in 1975) jumping off a curb around 1986 or 1987 and had used this deck ever since.

One thing I used to get bummed about with this deck was that it would get eaten up when you do wheelies and the tail hits the pavement. It was also a little too flexy when you push hard on the tail. I guess I was used to plywood and solid maple.

I’ve never got used to the modern wider boards. I guess I’m just a dinosaur.

Here’s a funny story, back in 1979 I took an old fiberglass board that Bernie had and cut it into fins for a fish a reshaped. I bet that board would be something value today. I think Bernie posted a shot of the board before I reshaped it on the Spearfish thread I started. That shot was after it was broken in half once. You can see the patch on the big middle section. I guess I’ve destroyed several historical pieces over the years.

Take care Herb.

Aloha, Harry

Late1976 to early 1977 Compton/Lynwood boarder.

Those trucks are Bennett-Pro tops w/ custom, aluminum cast baseplates and early, prototype Tunnel Wheels, on a early, first production run, balsa core Jay Adams Z-Flex.

In other words; in the forefront of modern skateboarding.

To me it was an obsession.

I torn up plenty…and turned them into…TAIL BLOCKS, FISHING LURES,FINS,BIRD HOUSES,etc…not to mention how much I killed out in the desert…LOTS!!!TONS!!!

GOOD ONE Grant !

Got all kinds of clips/mags/ads.Someday I’ll figure out how to post them.

Hi Herb

Thanks for the skate deck offer. I’ll pass this time. Please give it to someone who would use it. My skateboarding days are long gone.

Ray

Ray it’s more of a wallhanger,to nice to ride, even though I did give it one small session.

The deck is 7ply maple and it came via backdoor from Kelly Belmar’s factory…it’s one of the first Dogtown decks after the movie, and not many of these exisist.

My kids current quiver.
