Aloha, i just sheared a side skeg off my board at Honolua Bay and thought it was a good time to try a different size/design replacement. I’m aiming towards faster turns and more speed generating configuration. Currently, I have a 8" cut-away fin and have the following two questions about skegs: 1. Size: what effect does going with Smaller Skegs have, does this produce more speed, faster turns? 2. Shape: assymetrical or symmetrical? How do skegs that have a Flat inside face perform versus skegs that are rounded/beveled on both sides (similar to a center fin)? Thanks! Eryck
There’s alot more info that’s needed before anyone can comment coherently. What’s the board shaped like? Does it have down rails? Smaller fins are going to equate to less drag. But, less drive as well. What fin templates do you ahve on there now? Alot of the Hawaiians longboarders we’re working with are going with larger side bites 4-3/8" and slightly smaller center fins like 7". The more vertical the template the looser the feel. The more swept templates produce more drive at the expense of manueverability.
Thanks Tom for your response. More Info (as far as I know): I have a 9’0" stewart “MWC” (Multi Wave Condition) model - touted as “a performance noserider. Wider with flat rocker. The tail is double concave square tail similar to LSP.” Not sure about the down-rails. I’ll check on the fin system tonite, It is a screw in system that has one screw at the top of the box, angling downward at a 45 degree angle to hold in the skeg. Thanks again, eryck http://www.stewartsurfboards.com/
If it’s a Stewart it’s probably Future Fins. They have templates that could work for the scenario I described above.
