I am off to boldly be landlocked like no sea rat has been before!
Buisness calls and i am off to the Yukon, two and a half monthes of living in a tent and being landlocked (i hope i don’t get too cranky). If anyone out there is in SE alaska or Canadian coast I would be stoked to meet up message me as i will be atempting a full coastal tour of canada and the norther states on route back to California around the end of July or beginning of August.
Big mahalos for all the help and motivation from everyone on my projects for the season and putting up with my enviromental rantings. May your summers be blessed by perpetual south swells that never drop below 6 feet.
Howzit Skeletor, I know how you must feel and I'm going to be in a similar situation since we have to be out of our house by August 15th and I'm leaving for either Az. or Las vegas on the 16th of August. After 35 years in Hawaii it's going to be a pretty big changs but I feel that change can be a plus. The bummer is that there will no longer be a Kokua Fiberglass on Kauai and the shapers are bummed. I ave 4 more boards to do and then the shop comes down. Aloha,Kokua
that sounds insane… many people don’t ever get to do trips like that in their lifetimes.
noticed your from west marin, i grew up in Novato…rode my first real wave at Pallowl (god i can’t even remember how to spell it), had my first near death at south beach, amazing place to grow up…
After 6 years of great waves, lots of fun learning how to shape (and learning how much I still have to learn), skateboarding and building quarter pipes, training jiu jitsu with some of the best in the world, and generally becoming totally immersed in So Cal, I am relocating my family to Connecticut for job reasons (got laid off and found a really good job there). I don’t know where I will find waves but if they are there then I will find them. Leaving California is killing me but like Kokua said, change is not a bad thing.
In the words of John Milton, “The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make heaven of Hell, and a hell of Heaven.”
Howzit T-Roy, Over here it's the season of the big Real Estate boom. Mainlanders are buying every available lot or house that they can. The area I live in is about 80% vacaton rentals and they make enough $ to pay the big motgages that come with the homes. Housing is a very big issue here these days and the local people have no chance of buying homes so alot of them move to Vegas which has become " The other Hawaii". It will be less difficult for me since I haven't been able to surf for a couple of years due to a really bad shoulder. Aloha,Kokua
two and a half months pish. i went from october 16 to march 26 with out getting to go in the water nevermind even that the waves sucked and the water was cold. plus not having ever surfed in a 5/4 before was a real wake up call. mind surf everyday it will go by fast. plus alaska and that region of canada are beautiful.
Sorry to hear you are leaving the island. I can relate to housing problems. Trying to buy a place. A real challenge. Good luck wherever you go. Remember, leaving also means arriving.
When you’re in Alaska, I hope you find a large wall size mirror, so you can pose and pretend that you’re flying down the line on a 5’10" fish at 3’s.
It might look kind of corny though, because you’ll be wearing boots and a fur jacket.
I feel your pain. I’m heading off island to do a 24 month stint in Philadelphia, and will be back on Oahu now and then. I won’t be camping in the outback, but I’ll be paying rent!!! Money into a black hole!
I’m going to give surfing NJ a serious try.
Best of luck to you. Spend some time in a UV tanning bed, so the sunburn aint so bad when you come back! See ya around one day, maybe at Ala Mo’ Beach Park.
You’ll be back in a couple months right?? It’s been fun reading your posts. I hope alaska inspires you to make a wicked shape when you return…who knows what kind of shapes lurk in the yukon…later.
shiiit, I am sorry for u both. Skeletor you stint will be over in no time, like a long distance fu@k budd% your time apart eith th sea will make it that much exciting when you return to her dripping wet??? Kokua, I do aloot of lurking here and love to read your posts, the simplistic insight that you have given me and countless others is incredable. Vegas is well vegas nothing more nothin less. You and your clan always have the spare room in my house if you ever need some S.D. sun or waves. Best of luck to you both check in and have a beer for us. Greg
Howzit nubee, Glad to hear my posts are of value, that's what makes Swaylocks da kine site. Also thanks for the offer for a place to stay if I'm in your neck of the woods. My step son lives in San Clemente and I also have longtime friends in North S.D. area. Vegas may not be my final destination and I may end up in Az. which is where I own a home and have businesses with my brother. Rick Holt called me yesterday and after telling him what was going down he told me to make sure I visit Greg Loer and get some heads up on his R.R. epoxy. After 33 years of laid back living on Kauai I'm actually looking forward to some bigger city excitement in my life. I can look back and know that I got the best of Kauai before the masses came. Surf breaks and beaches that were empty in the 70's are now packed and the surfing population has grown 10 fold especially since Andy and Bruce have exposed our North shore as a proving grounds for potential pro surfers. Even one of their uncles hates what their popularity has done to his favorite surf break. I think it's time to broaden my horizons some what and expierence some of the other facets that life has to offer. After surfing for almost 50 years and committting my self to the surfing life style since i was old enough to drive I have memories that will last me the rest of my life. I know I've had more than my share of magic surfing moments. Aloha,Kokua

That’s still a lot of water to cross…hope it goes well enough that maybe you and Greg can get together and buy Big Surf back and crank the desert up…extra epoxy float might go well in fresh water…
