Very specifically I'm looking for the front knob to a 5.5 amp Skil 100. It is a more rounded shape than the later models. Doug Felts? PeteC? Anyone?
Bill, I checked my extras, they are all the mushroom type (not rounded on the sides) but if you can’t get the real deal check out this ebay link, it could work if you modify it to male thread.
RAND,
Thank you. That's a good backup plan.
Hi Bill, those round knobs are very rare. Used on some Type 1& 2 only. Here’s the company that Skil got their knobs from, they still make the mushroom one. Go through the catalog and ask them for a sample of the one you want. The thread size on the baseplate is 3/8-16 female. http://www.daviesmolding.com/media/DaviesMolding_Catalog56.pdf Maybe T. Martin may have some; he doesn’t like them so he’s probably got some he switched out for the mushroom type. I’ll ask him this week.
Look at the “vintage tools” section on ebay. Those knobs were used on belt sanders and a bunch of other things. I bought an old belt sander and it had the knob and also identical trigger.

Pete,
I've used a Skill 100, with the round knob, since 1958. It's the Devil I know. I'll be glad to trade my mushroom knob, for the round one. The goal is to have both my long and short bed Skils feel exactly the same in hand. Say hello to Terry for me. And thank you for the help. Also, the Skil you worked on for me, is beyond sweet! Thanks again.
Roger,
Thank you, that's a good tip.
Hey Bill,
I think I have the round knob on my 190 or Type 2. I will be happy to switch with you. I have been reluctant to take off the knobs when they are very tight. Any tips for safely removing. I certainly don't want to crack it.
Tim
Tim,
Just use your hand, and twist the knob counter clockwise. Slow steady, increasing pressure will break it free, if it's stuck. Hands only, no ViseGrips, etc. Your knob may or may not have the threaded stud attached. I've seen 190's with the threaded stud attached to the front shoe extension of the frame. My Skil's require the knob's with the stud attached. Let me know what you have.
Aloha,
Why don’t you find someone with a lathe to turn you one? Maybe even custom turn it to your own specs.
Well, good fortune, and good friendship, have met in the person of Mr. Jim Phillips! Jim very generously exchanged knobs with one of his Skil's for me. Jim is easily one of the nicest people in this industry/craft. My very sincere thanks go out to Jim, and also to those who made such helpful suggestions.
Speaking of Skil Planers I just got my backup rebuilt by PeteC. It’s like new.He even fabricated a new motor intake cover for me. The guy does amazing work. I am stoked.
I am looking for a front depth shoe for a Skil planer to complete a restoration, If anyone has a lead on one let me know. I have an extra cutter head as well as some other small parts if there is a possibility of a trade. Thanks
PeteC is definitely the man when it comes to Skil planers, he answered a boatload of questions when I was rebuilding my first. It’s now in the hands of another Swaylocks member and hopefully getting plenty of use.
