Skil 100 Questions (Mea culpa)

Good day, All-

I have two quick questions:

  1. I am having difficulty removing the motor from the housing; any recommendations going forward?

  2. Does anyone have a current source of supply for the depth shoe?

Thank you for your consideration.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Pete or someone who has done this previously will chime in.  Give"em a little time to run across your thread.  I have never removed the motor from the housing.  Lowel

Paging PeteC.

Usually, the motor will come out with the bearing attached.

Use Elbow grease.

The bearing sits inside a cup.

A little heat on outside may free it.

You did take the brushes out right?

If you find a source for a shoe, let me know.

That is all I need to finish my Type-5.

Yeah what Barry said was my thought.  Maybe a little liquid wrench in the housing where the bearing is.  Maybe tap it a couple of times with a ball pin hammer very lightly.  Should drop out.  Ditto on be sure you remove the brushes first.

OK, if I understand you correctly. You are asking how to remove the armature.

This is very easily done. First take the intake grill off by removing the small screw. Remove the carbon brushes. Then take one of the longer screws from the bell housing that I see in the photo that you have already removed. It has the same threading that the small screw that holds the grill in place has. Thread it into the grill screw hole turning it clockwise. It will push the armature and the inner bearing out. Oh, and please don’t hit it with a ball-peen hammer.

Thank you, for your input gentlemen.

Followed Wavecraft’s guidance (and small kine rubber mallet) and it came out easily.

Now, if only we can locate a trove of front shoes somewhere.

Have a wonderful week!

Good tip from Mitch.  I never have to get that far into mine.  I let Pete do the heavy lifting and he does a fantastic job.  Are you stripping every thing down for bead blast and paint or got to get the motor rewound??  I had someone recenttly text me trying to get the cutter head removed.  Got the front shoe off etc. but no matter how hard he pulled or tapped it wouldn’t come out.  I asked him to send me a pic or two of what he had or had done.  When I got the first pic. I realized he had not removed the retainer and the three screws that hold the cutter head in.  Go figure.  Lowel

Hello, Lowel-

Completely stripped down to clean (just picked it up) & inspect. It was full of cobwebs & wood dust, but should clean up really well. Plan on replacing cord, bearings & belt (blades are sharp). Stud screw in depth shoe was busted off deep inside & had to drill it out, hence need for source of supply or trip to welder. Spent lots of time in the archives & seems everyone echoes your sentiments towards Pete C. Will go that route if I have to start treading water.

Regards-

Daniel

Pete may have what you need.  He made a screw for the front shoe out of a piece of all-thread for me when I lost one.  I have an extra that I bought off Ebay in case I ever lose another.  Bought that from “old tool guy” on Ebay .

I made one from a allen head threaded bolt from Home Depot.

Just ground off the threads until it was the right thickness.

Pretty easy with a grinder.

Great remedies for the stud screw, but screw not the problem. Unfortunately the stem cracked during the drill out. Either new shoe or really good welder…

Welding is your answer.     Weld.   Drill a pilot hole, and re-tap the correct thread.     Looks like there’s been some welding on the shoe in the past.

Pete C. was making an aftermarket improved shoe at one time. I have one. Super quality and a bit more lift in the nose. Ya might want to ask him.
