Happy New Year, everyone. Does anybody have a contact in the SoCal area who is willing to take on Skil 100 repairs and upgrades? I heard thru the grapevine that Pete C isn’t taking on new work. I need to replace the drum and bearings and don’t trust myself to do it alone!
I think most tool repair shops can handle the work you are looking for. If you ate talking replacing the drum, as in replacing it with another one, that is another story. Ideally, it would benice if there is another repair person close to as knowledgable as Pete C. on Skil 100’s.
There is a lot of info/knowledge of Skil 100"s shared here on this site. I will be following this thread, as I would like to have some work done on my Skil.
Yep, I want to swap the stock drum out for a Sheartak that I bought a few months back.
I got in touch with Westwood Power Tools (thanks to an old Swaylocks thread) in Culver City and they sound pretty confident that they can handle the job. They mentioned that this isn’t the first time that a shaper has asked to have their old Skil fixed… I will try to remember to follow up here once the job is done.
Yes there are shops around that can work on them. I took the first one I ever owned to a power tool shop in San Luis Obispo. I think I had something simple done to it Like brushes and a belt. Since then I have learned to do a few things, but relied on Pete for anything over my head. It’s easy enough to get the cutter head out. The grit barrel from Shaper Australia has the bearings on them, so that makes the install easy. In your case if there are no bearings already installed you would want to put new bearings on your new cutter head. Easier than pulling bearings off the old one. But it’s better if you just let someone do it for you. Whoever you get to do it, be sure they can source bearings. Been a few years since I had one apart, but I am sure that once I started in on it, things would come back to me.
