A sharp hand plane works well. Everything else I tried was just plane frustrating (pun intended).
surform

I like skinning it with a sureform, its probaly easier with an eletric plane, but i don’t have one. After I skin it I use a old block plane it works pretty good.

What are your plans after skinning the blank???
At some point you have to buy tools and learn skills…
Borrow or rent one…
I built my first board with a brand new Sears Craftsman planer I bought specifically for the task. I did so because I was told it was that important. I was 16 years old.

ROFL!!
Quote of the year candidate…
Learn to sharpen/set the blade correctly and a block plane can be your friend.
you can pick up a cheap planer (£25.00) which I found to be adequate for skinning (but not much else) I also used a surform for the concave bits in the nose area of the deck, and thought it would have done for the whole board.
I did my rail bands with the surform and heavy grit paper glued to a big pice of timber…seems to have worked OK.
Peace!
so ive skinned the board: When I tried the plane on the bottom of the board, the foam peeled right off, but on the deck, it became really rough and I had to sand alot. However, I have a couple nicks that are sorta deep. Should I fill them in with anything? Thanks
Finish shaping your board without focusing on those deep gouges. Ignore em. after your final screening, Use a plastic squeegy and spread LIGHT!!! white spakle in dem holes , dents, gouges, whatever you did. Dont use your finger and no need to sand, if you do a smooth pull of it. Like spreading drywall mud. You will barely see it on the foam and you can glass right over it.
