small disaster on FCS installation

Hi.

Just installed a set of FCS (the new clear plugs) with red epoxy resin.

Anyway I returned to the board after about 1 hour and noticed that some resin had got down the screw hole.

Aaarrrgggggg… Normally I’m so careful when blocking these off. The resin had well and truly kicked but not totall solid. I tried to use a sharp implimet to pull out as much as I could but I could only get a little bit out.

Can you guys suggest a method for gettign this resin out. Is there a solvent that will tear up epoxy… i’m in the pharmaceutical business and have access to pretty much every nasty solvent so if you guys know of one… please recomend it

Thanks

Brian

I’ve had this happen before and used a square blade bradawl to get it out, you need something like that, ie with good handle, so you can get aggressive with it as you will need to. I used the bradawl to form a hole, as you would to make a hole for a screw with it and then picked the resin away from the thread into the hole, hope that makes sense. You could use a drill with a small bit to get started, being very careful to not damage the thread of the plug, that would make it easier. I’m assuming here that the allan bolt is holding in the install fin so not that much resin will need removing. I would avoid the solvent route, but thats just me. Good luck.

Howzit Brian, One thing to do is sand as much of the epoxy off since you have to sand the plugs anyways. Then drill a hole and use an easy out. You can always replace the screw if it gets buggered up.Aloha,Kokua

Drilled the hole and then followed it with a healthy dose of brute force and ignorance with a tiny screwdriver.

The plug is fine and I just put a fresh screw into it.

job done

Thanks for the advice

The application of heat to epoxy also causes it to become really brittle and easy to bust apart.

I have used a soldering Iron with the smallest bit I could find to cut out unwanted epoxy spills this route is fast but also of course can be damaging if applied without carefull planning.

With a good hot soldering iron blade you can shave epoxy and shape it to some degree.
