Smart way to wet the laps while glassing

Just saw this & wanted to share.

@Huck thanks for the share.

I can’t tell if he is ‘waterfalling’ epoxy and letting it hit the ground or using polyester without a respirator…neither of those two cases would be good in my book.

The folding up of the draped material is good, I do that to keep epoxy on the board. There is a Fiberglass Hawaii video of Jack Reeves where he’s doing a board, similar flip of the rail cloth and then dipping his gloved hand into the polyester resin, wearing a respirator, and then coats the rails. The rails start at about 1:50 and 9:00.

Cool to see a local North Carolina shaper, Shawn O’Donnell on Swaylocks. It’s not exactly a hotbed of surfboard construction here :smiley:

jrandy, I’d assume that’s epoxy since he’s doing carbon. But yeah, he’s very generous with it’s application.

I do the Jack Reeves method. I fold up the laps and wet up. I feel waterfall method wastes alot of resin and a lot more mess on the ground.

That crew is making some nice boards for sure, no disrespect intended.

Epoxy would make more sense with carbon and perhaps he’s onto something for de-airing the pulled resin before tucking the laps.

Also, using a little extra resin versus having to rework a carbon rail, I’d probably use the extra resin too. Once you sand into carbon fiber and send black dust everywhere there are usually some strong words and a period of introspection followed by having to clean it all up… :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:
