So you go to pick up your new custom...

and as you check it out you notice a half dollar size ding on the rail.

Shapers, what would you do if this were pointed out to you?

Buyers, what would you expect from the shaper?

any thoughts?

A question first: Did you point it out right there at the shop or did you wait until you got home? If you saw it right at the shop (and really even if you didn’t) we would offer to build you another custom or we would sell you the board at a discounted price and fix it for free. Customs take a while so most people don’t want to wait another 8 weeks or more to get their board so they are usually fine if you just discount it. In MOST cases the customer is always right. Notice I said in MOST cases.

I pointed it out right then and there, apparently the board fell over when he brought it in the shop. Thanks for the input.

the shop you were getting it from (not the shaper) should take care of you

I know I would

They are one and the same, boards are shaped in the warehouse/factory and brought to the shop.

if they don’t “take care of me”, should I request that they do?

So…

what did you do?

and what did they offer?

Still being fixed…I’ll probably find out tomorrow.

Austins is right, I would ofer to make another or offer a discount and offer to fix the ding.

If it was bought at a shop and not direct from the shpperthen I would expect the shop to offer the discount or pay for the repair.

any thoughts?

Thought I’d get more feedback here. Looks like I’m going to pick the board up tonight, should I pursue a discount or take it as is?

I’d at least ask for one or see what they can do about it. It’s kind of lame they didn’t offer, but it happens. Don’t get agro about it, but you paid/were quoted/ect for a new board, not a new board with a ding in the rail…

Best wishes,

I recently bought a new car. On the final inspection before I drove off, we found some chips in the paint. The dealer did not have the same car in the same color (required by the wife) on the lot, so they knocked $500 off the purchase price and paid to repair the paint chips.

If the damage isn’t major, I’d have them repair it to good as new and discount the board a few bucks. You paid for a brand new board without damage. If they want you to accept a damaged board then you should receive a price concession because you are not receiving what you paid for. No two ways about it. Or don’t take the board and get your money back.

Unless we’re talking Skip Frye or someone like that or you’ve been waiting a year for the board, you can probably find a comparable board somewhere else. It is just a surfboard, with some exception.

I Agree. wouldn’t be getting agro, but I am not paying all that money to get a board with a ding. I would either expect a discount if I still wanted teh board or would ask for another custom board and be prepared to wait.

End of the day you ordered and and agreed to pay a set price for a new board, putting a ding in it breaches the agreement.

would be surprised though if they didn’t come to the party.

First ding is done and out of the way and you don’t even have to reproach yourself for doing it.

Are you planning of surfing the board or hanging it on your wall as object de art?

Why try to get a discount if it is repaired well.

Enough consumer snivelling going on in this world.

Surf it like you stole it I say and be none to concerned with cosmetics :).

“First ding is done and out of the way and you don’t even have to reproach yourself for doing it.”

There you go…no problem!

Did you cop any attitude when you pointed out the ding? Was the guy obliging or begrudging? As a customer I would take a wait and see approach…A good shop can fix dings imperceptibly well.

Its a dicey one as a proprietor…I once had a guy pick up a board, stoked to the back teeth. Six weeks later I asked him for a ride report. He had’nt ridden it because he could’nt stand the sight of the spray, and wanted a refund!

I lost it! I mean - FFS!!

The art of tact cuts both ways.

First…I’m glad I’m not the only one that has an 8 week turnaround time for a custom.

Second… I’d fix it free and knock a nice chunk off the agreed-to price. On a $700 board I’d say $625. And his next ding repair free, too.
