3 friends and I are thinking to visit SoCal in July for a couple of weeks in an RV and hopefully some surfing! July kind of fits with our plans but I gather SoCal could be flat and/or uber crowded! Are we mad to come at this time? Do was stand a chance of finding some uncrowded waves??? We’ve currently got 5 guide books that all point to the fact it’s going to be crowded!
Cheers,
Olly

well - everybody surfs in the summertime… that’s no reason to think you can never find an uncrowded break. You just have to be willing to get up early, or walk a bit to get away from the places with easy access and the mid-day crowds. Southern California is a pretty big place…
RV would be the way to go out here, you’d have a hell of a time finding hostels here, and summer is a bad time to live out of a hotel. but if you have the time head up to the central coast, alot of breaks out there, and not a whole lot of people surfing either.
We gave up on the RV and have hired a Durango instead and are hosteling it! 2 days in and it’s proving like we made a wise move, the 4x4 is a lot nicer to drive and take places than an RV would have been and the hostels have introduced us to some wicked new people!
