Soft after glassing

hi,

i gotta a quick question after my first glass job… I used RR epoxy (no additive F) on cheap eps from lowes (no spackle)… i decided to glass this cheap foam has a “practice” round. i have also shaped a foam blank that i got from fiberglass supply (who has moved within 20 minutes of me!) , but decided i decided that ruining an expensive blank would be much worse than ruining some crappy eps… anyway, i glassed it and it went pretty well… but after i finished , it is soft… not the epoxy though… you can tap it and it feels really strong… but when you push on the board you can see it indent slightly… not on the rails though… mainly just the bottom and deck. Is this just the really low density eps foam squishing under the glass/epoxy?? that is what i think it is, but some clarification would be very helpfull to make sure i am not doing something completely wrong… thanks all!!

How many layers did you lay up? What was the weight of the cloth? I am not the epoxy expert but I believe most guys are doing at least 3 layers on the deck. BamBam, any input here?

i did one layer of 6 on the bottom and two on the top… Which i believe was the problem with the cheap EPS… on the EPOXY PRIMER resource it was said to use one more one each side than i did (minimum)… so it ended up not being strong enough… but i think that when i glass my higher density US blank, i wont need to do the extra layers and can stick to 1 on bottom, 2 on top…

sounds like a foam density issue…

the foam that you got from Home Depot is more than likely 1 pound / cubic foot foam…

the blank is probably denser… ie. 2 pounds / cubic foot.

just my guess

Your glass job is fine - give it a few days before you start poking at it when you do your board. I do 6/6 decks and 6 bottoms on 2lb+ cbead eps and they come out amazingly strong.

The most likely explanation for that is the foam you got from HD is of a larger bead size (B) and.or lighter density 1lb ish which can compress/pressure ding under the glass (and delam bc there are more chemicals that get released in the cheap stuff ).

good foam!

Home Depot foam is 1#. For that you need three layers of 6. Even with that it doesn’t come out as hard as 2# with two 6’s. The single six bottom on one pound is just spongy.
