Solarez questions

Yeah I searched but still have a few questions. Looking at using Solarez for the first time. The Solarez Laminating resin says it will “cure to a bone dry surface”. For lam resin I want a tacky surface for the hot coat to stick to not bone dry. What gives?

Also how much cat are you guys adding for logo’s and finboxes?

solarez(or solergeez as i call it)..........is just a uv resin.

all uv lam resins will dry non-stick.

that's because it's cured.

(tacky laminations are uncured.such as using non-uv resin with mekp cat.,...it takes about two weeks for resin w/o uv cat. to cure)

in other words : lam resin when cured is dry,not tacky to touch.

as far as it bonding to the hotcoat resin...........there's no problem with bonding as it is a chemical fusion.

when a board is finished/complete.........it's no longer layers of bs on foam ..........it's a solid object,,,,,,,,,,not lam resin, glass, hotcoat, plugs, etc.,but one solid object............fused.

Ok Herb, so you’re saying the UV resin is “dry” but not fully “cured” and the hotcoat will chemically bond to the dry UV lam?

completely dry or tacky,,,,,uv lam has no wax on the surface.therefore hotcoat resin will bond.

regular lam resin and mekp takes weeks to cure(heat can speed up the curing process in regular lam resin),where as uv resin is cured in about,5 minutes to 1/2 hour in bright sunlight.

[/quote]

depends on the resin amounts and temps.

about 5cc's of mekp in 8oz.'s of lam resin @68 degrees F,gives you about 10 minutes working time.(keep in mind you're using fillers like cab-o-cel or air-o-cell which can greatly increase or decrease gel times)

Thanks for the info Herb, I appreciate it!

hopefully i didn't confuse you.

the bottom line is if it's lam ...........you can get a bond w/o sanding the surface.

if it's gloss or hotcoating resin .............you need to sand the surface off first.

herb

I’m good, yeah I know hot coat or gloss has wax in it and you’d have to sand if coating again.

good man johnny !

yeah, unless you've every seen a lam go cured...........you'd never know.

btw. when lam resin is completely cured.......... it can be sanded just like hotcoat resin.

infact cat. is just an excellerator for resin.........meaning: resin will dry and cure on it's own(takes weeks/ months).

hope this helps post the board when you get it done.

Yeah just double checking a few things since I never used the UV. I’ve worked with poly for years and I’m very comfortable with it and know what it’s going to do. I was laid off so I’ll actually get to glass during daylight hours so I figure I’d give the UV res a shot. Looking forward to the quick flip times. Thanks again.

Is that because resin is 40-60% styrene, and the styrene evaporates?

Like the tree-resin going hard over a long time too?

That boggles me, never knew that [but i dont work with pe though]

And you say it bonds chemically too? do you have a link to the proof of that? I thought after polymerization, you cannot add extra chains?

but hey, i am always wrong, unless i am wrong, and am actually right!

thanks for the xplanation!

how is that finless board with holes in it holding up?

wouter

I absolutely love working with UV cure resin.  They should make an episode of the show Modern Marvels about it.

wouter,

as long as it's a co-polymer it will fuse, not bond.

epoxy bonds............elmer's glue bonds.................pe/pu ,fuses together.

in the case of styrene most of it will evaporate into the atmosphere, but there is a small amount in the fusion process that stays.

in an air tight enviroment like a metal can that doesnot breath, the styrene will go rock hard in time(about 2 months or less, depending).

tree sap actually can go rock hard as well.......as it,"petrifies" like in the case of the mineral..... amber,or copal.........even further along the way is............... petrified woods.

as far as my finless projects go,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i'm always working with the improvements/designing/creating part of it...........keeping simplicity in mind.....that is............i don't think the world is ready to accept it yet.

but in the mean while i'll keep building em............with improvements along the way.

thanks for asking.
