Some photos of my first...

Well fish it is!

Well after quite a while in the shadows I have finally gotten some pics together and thougt I would post them up her! I have gotten so much from this site, with out this I would still be in the dark! I have made just about all the mistakes on this first one that I possible could but with limited knowledge and no acces to real life shapers I stumbled through! I have ridden the board and it does surf although it seems to be a bit sluggish [I’m thinking there is a fin problem]. I’m in full swing with #2 and 3 so hopefully they will be better!

The dims on this are from memory 5’8 - 2" ½ - 21[?]

Thanks everyone for being helpfull and insightfull and more than willing to share

Outline tools [fishing rod for the curves]

Glueing up eps foam… (going for eps/epoxy)

Humble beginnings with no shaping stands or room, but itchy fingers! I had to hoover about every 3 passes with sandpaper

Finally got around to making some stands! Wobbely, not level, ugly, but functional when you are stoked! Still hoovering every few passes to keep dust down.

Final outline, about ready for my wife to come do the art!

Swallow, fun to shape, a bugger to glass! Never figured it out so ended up with a lumpy mess… It looks very asymetrical on the photo but really its not bad…

Foil

My wifes aret on the bottom! I did the top myself and it looks very ugly so thats a no show, I actually have no photos…

I never sealed the blank so lots of little holes in the foam to show in the final board… Hmm you gotta learn…

Glassing with 1x4oz bottom and 2x4oz top. Another mistake was to cut the laps too short… well we’ll call this a prototype

Glassing the bottom with epoxy SP 115 system. I never did a filler/sand/gloss coat so as a result the board is extremly light! Putting the fins on shifted the center of balance back about 3ft[!]

Setting on the keels! Home made, way too thick, but all part of the expirence…

Well thats what I got of pics for now! It was a fun project and I’m just inspired by what all the people on this form can do! “Luckily” I’m not one of those that cranck out a near perfect first board [as I have seen people on this site do] so the journey is that much longer for me, but as I’m having so much fun I dont ever want to get there!

Thanks for watching

Christian

Looks good Moksa, Im guessing you have a very understanding wife to let you shape in the house…

I see you went stringerless…Was there a reason? flex ect?

guess the question is hows the board ride???

Very nice first board Moksa. I’m also a little amazed that you shaped it in your house. You’ll be cleaning up foam dust for a year! I’ve been making mostly stringerless 2lbl EPS for a little while now and don’t miss the stringer for performance. I’ve also used the same glass schedule and have come to the conclusion that while it’s strong enough the boards come out too light for my taste. I don’t know anything about waves in Denmark though. I have also experienced the fins changing the center of mass drastically. Standard leash can feel like an anchor so I use a comp weight leash. I have a 5’6" fish on the shaping racks right now that I’m going to glass 6B, 4+6D. Winter boards will be 6B, 2x6D from now on.

Post fin pics and let us know how it rides.

Fun isn’t it! I’m stoked for you! Now all you need is a storm to role in so you’ll have some surf to test your creation on. By the way if you shaped that board with only sanding blocks, it turned out pretty good for your first. Have fun!

Hey

Thanks for the replyes, it’s cool to show off your work to people who acctually understands the process and the joy!

As for the shaping in the house thing, it is actually a built on garage/storrage space, but yeah foam dust is pretty much in every stored box cause I could’t wait to get things started… My wife is very understanding!!!

only sandpaper on this one to keep it simple…

The stringerless was a combination of factors; easy, low weight, not too much problems with strength at this short board. It would probably have been easyer with a stringer in some situations, like getting the symetry down and such, but the hassel of putting it in beat that [I’m going with stringer on #3]

fin outline

As I said the fins ended up way too thick [dims gone from memory and I’m not home to check] so they slow the board down I think… Could be many things though…

For my recent projects I have hung tarpaulin for dust control and am trying my hand with an electrical planer [way more messy than hand sanding]…

Thanks

Christian

they dont look to thick

1/2 inch at the base is a good start

Hey Silly

I just bought some Hobie fish fins from true ames and they seem to be around half that with… S I concluded that mine were far too thick! But you might be right and foil on the fins also play a major part in the performance or lack thereoff…

Thanks
