Was just dumping some pics onto photobucket and figured I hadn’t posted any pics on here for like a year or so. I’m so balls-deep in this bamboo right now. Like lots on here I was all prepped up for the bertstyle boards, and have this obsession with how sick Danny Hess boards are, so when Greg posted these I was amping to say the least. Here’s a lamboozle for Gabe Kling:
The lamboozles are sick, everybody’s amping on them for sure. BUT, here’s Gabe’s Ferrari:
Nice board,Gabe rips too.Where do you get your bamboo?
This is a stringerless Eskimo carbon frame for Jody, definitely a sweet build. Gotta find the perfect stringerless poly core…
Here’s my first Lamboozle for Luke Dogg…
Here’s a giant SuPosite balsa carbon and stuff…
Here’s Skip all stoked out
he shaped the SuP…
here’s a quiver pic I posed for. all my firsts; first vacuum board, first carbon frame, my carbon sweet spot suspension (best blank ever!!), dow, corecell, my almost 4 year old daily driver quad with a pvc stringer, and of course all my fishing poles:)
Here’s what’s been taking up most of my time:
she’s due this Thursday, can’t wait. I’ll post pics later of his 5’2" Dow smurfboard I just finished:)
That Dow board for Gabe was the first one I used the new Green Room resin on, and I’m pretty stoked on it. I’ll post some of my observations… It’s def. hot in the pot, gotta get it out quick. I was worried about flip times and all, but I was stoked that I shaped that one on a Tuesday around lunch, and sanded first thing Thursday morning without any late nights. Flip times not any big deal. I can’t hotcoat 3 boards at a time like with RR. What I’m doing is painting all the laps at once, and pretty much as soon as those are painted, mixing just enough for one hotcoat, doing the first board on the racks, then mixing up enough for the second hotcoat, and so on. So kinda one at a time mixing so I don’t have too much material in the pot at any time. I noticed it gave me a really sweet window for trimming stuff, Dr. Rob says it has “slowed down b-stage curing” which makes sense and I noticed that for sure. I’m really stoked on not using any thinners or additives. The resin also sands really nice, very dusty I like it. Saving a few pieces of paper. All of these observations are from a climate controlled lam room at 82 degrees (love my lam room!!! it’s like 28 outside, but 82 in there). Feel like I’m cheating on a girlfiend though, being a FL shaper Greg’s a fuggin legend. But I am stoked on the Green Room, boards look really nice and white.
another shameless plug, I’m distributing my blanks through Atlantic Surfoam now, so next time you’re in there ask Skip or Donna to check out the Drew-Tang custom cores:)
Yeah, Jesus. Getting the bamboo somewhere on Google. If you’re in Florida I’ll be distributing 4x8 sheets of 1/42 bamboo soon. Email me if you want some sooner and I’ll add a sheet or two for you in the next batch, like Thursday.
Drew
Drewtang, I am in your neck of the woods and was wondering if youare producing any EPS Longboard blanks? Wasnt sure if the SUP was a specail project or what. I would love to have an in town blank supplier.
Thanks
ps. here’s another classic, St. Aug Santa…
Yeah, def. doing LB blanks, some stock ones and customs are available. We can do custom profiles off finished boards if you’d like. All 100% Bass sticks milled in-house. Also selling stringers, I know alot of guys around need good stringers.
Thanks!
Drew
ps my cell is 9043478879 I don’t really get to log on too much anymore…
Hey Drew,
Great looking stuff you’re doing.
Thanks for giving GreenRoom Epoxy a try and I’m glad you’re liking it. It is a slightly different beast than what most people are used to, but as you saw, it doesn’t take long to figure out.
Give me a shout if you need anything.
Oh and good luck with the new baby…say goodbye to a full night’s sleep for the next 8-12 months.
Rob
Nice work man,
Do you know the weight of that DOW stick?
That thing looks sick.
Thanks Dr. Rob! Yeah, took just a few boards to get used to not bad at all. The boards look great, thank you. When the baby comes I’ll be doing daddy day care then starting my workday around 5 so I’ll be a vampire for sure. At least I won’t have to deal with the boys dropping by everyday and clogging up my work. We’ll see, looking forward to the adventure.
Slashzilla: thanks man, that dow board was just over 5lbs. Dow is the best, period. Just can’t sell 'em… VIP only.
Tight work! Cool to see so many varied construction methods.
Can’t wait to try a veneer over a stringerless blank. The 1/42" stuff is easy to find online and it’s cheap-
http://www.mastergardenproducts.com/bambooveneer.htm
4’ x 8’ x 1/42" ~ $35
Daaaaaayum Drew - you are blowing this place up - boards look insane!
Thanks Lawless, you can find the bamboo for even cheaper! I think bamboo is perfect. I like the unidirectional strength, the natural feeling flex-back, not to mention it looks unreal.
Yeah big daddy grasshopper!
hi, thanks for posting pics of your boards, they all look spectacular, the blue dow seems to have all the qualities of a good blank , compression strength, lightness and best of all waterproof, others have had delam problems how do you get over this or do you just leave the surface finish quite coarse? thanks , pete
Hey Peteuk. Nah, I haven’t overcome this problem. I poked holes in them, that kinda worked, I left them coarse, that might have helped a little but not worth the extra resin. I finish them smooth like frikkin felt then just do a really tight lam, pull super tight and get all of the resin out, no pooling whatsoever. That’s my formula, nothing too special, just don’t sell them like I said VIP only. As soon as I do a custom Dow I know that same kid is going to lock the board up at community college in his 130 deg. Honda with the windows up tight, so I just don’t do it. The guys riding these already know to keep them on ice. Always in a daybag no matter what. Oak told me the best analogy; these are Ferraris, you don’t take the Ferrari out to pick up groceries.
Drewtang, thanks for that , the blue stuff is hard to get here in the uk , i can get a uk equivelent but it is an orangey/pink colour ,i have tried it with balsa and cherry wood as skins but i can see it will delam in the heat because the cherry wood had air pockets between the wood and the foam where it did/nt stick that well ,
i will try just glassing the stuff and see how that turns out, thanks , pete
