sound proof

Can anybody help me with sound proofing my shaping room . Whats the cheapest way . I really dont have to get all the noise down but i dont want to piss my neighbors off either LOL . I`m on a budget here . Aloha , Cal

It depends on how much you want to spend. There are products that will totally eliminate all sound. Still one of my favorites that we used to do on the North Shore 30 plus years ago is going to the chicken farms on the Kahuhu side and getting a whole bunch of egg crates and attatching them to the walls. When you’re living on Top Ramen and peanut butter you have to be resourceful! aloha, tom

Egg crate works good. Also any type of foam padding to absorb the sound. Foam egg crate padding works well.

The nightclub fire that killed 98 people in Rhode Island last month happened for a number of building code violations. One was the use of a non-code foam for sound proofing; perhaps similar to what you guys are talking about. It is said that it burns faster than gasoline. Code-approved insulating foam is fire-retardent. Be careful. Be noisy. Stay alive. Rob Olliges

check the dumpsters behind the carpet shops, they throw old carpet pad and carpet that can be stapled to or behind the walls and it’s FREE. can be a bit stinky or dirty though, just be sure to get it when it hasnt rained for awhile. I cut and use it under the glassing stands for drips and throw it after a couple of boards.

If you wear ear muffs you’ll silence your shaping room. If you wear a blind fold, you’ll shape from instinct…and from bloody fingers!

Thanks guys … i think i`ll go with the egg crates or old carpet padding . Aloha , Cal ( CLsurfboards )

That count is now 99 who have lost their lives. They also claim for not to many $$$'s, the same “egg crate” material could have been purchased “flame retardant” Be safe, be careful !!!

I’ve heard of people using homosote wall board (it’s like very thick gray cardboard) for the interior walls/ceiling of their shops to absorb sound. Painted, it looks just like drywall. It’s at Home Depot - not sure of the price - Egg crate type foam padding is also available as mattress padding… it’s just foam that is a few inches thick with an egg crate shape in one side (hills and valleys), flat on the other… that may be expensive.

…Cal is talking about sound going outside of the room, not inside.Reading the original message might help,…You read english on What, don’t you?

If you are referring to me Herb (?) I understand completely. Sound proofing is done from the inside - as the idea is to keep the sound from escaping the room. Using homosote as interior wallboard will deaden sound a great deal more than regular drywall, plywood, or other denser, more solid products. Hope this is clear.

OK - I can read posts… but I obviously have trouble reading the subject lines! Sorry for the reaction Herb.

…Seems to be happening alot to me lately, …Some guy on the ncdsa skateboarding site is posting under my first name and sturring up s**t there for me to straighten out…Nice to have a CYBER watchdog covering my back now!!!Herb

Whats wrong with all the foam shaving that you clean up off the floor. But it into a sealed plastic bag and stuff it into you walls. Better still mix with a urethane bonding agent into a block that will fit the wall frame work Rabbit http://www.southcoastfoam.com.au

If you are short of money, search out for foam scraps, cardboard, egg cartons(but was your hands or you can get salmolnilla food poisioning. Or you can just buy the best sound proofing materials from a recording studio that is closing down.
