Sources in Cape Town / South Africa

With most of the Swaylocks users being from the USA, and to a lesser extent AU/NZ and Europe, much of the discussion refers to products and suppliers in these regions.  When I read about materials and techniques here, I have to find out whether the products discussed are available here in South Africa, and if so, where; or if not, whether there is an equivalent or alternative available here.  I know we have several manufacturers here making great boards, so obviously materials are available.  But I’m not really talking about suppliers to “industrial” manufacturers, I’m talking about supply to hobbiest-hackers like me:-)

So I reckon it would be helpful to compile a list of sources, and South African equivalent products.  I’ll start with what I know (which isn’t much).

NOTES TO MODERATORS: 1. I’m not really sure if this is strictly the correct forum for this thread, but I put it here 'cause more people read the general discussion forum.  2.  Please don’t be too heavy-handed on suppliers who “advertise” their products/services in this thread - I really want to know what’s available.

Anyway, here’s my start:

PU BLANKS:

  1. Surfblanks, from Lifestyle in Muizenberg

  2. RSA Blanks, from Dean Geraghty

XPS BLANKS:

  1. Evenflow Surfboards, Muizenberg

EPS FOAM:

  1. Sagex, Bellville

GLASSING SUPPLIES:

  1. Fowkes Bros, Paarden Eiland

  2. AMT Composites, Maitland (epoxy brand: Gurit)

  3. Aerontec, Claremont (epoxy only?, brand; Surfclear; Aerialite cloth)

FIN BOXES, FINS, PLUGS ETC.

  1. 4-Way Fin Systems, Dean Geraghty

  2. Lifestyle, Muizenberg (glass-on fins, FCS-type plugs, etc.)

GLASSING (for the lazy Swaylocker):

  1. Innerlight Glassing, Paarden Eiland

  2. Curly, Muizenberg

I’ve also used the following internet mail-order suppliers:

  1. Shapers Australia (good experiences so far)

  2. Foam EZ in the USA (good service, expensive because they sent my package by courier)

  3. Rainbow Fins (expensive, especially for small orders because of transport costs, but nobody in SA makes big enough longboard fins!!!)

Anyone got other suggestions?  XPS foam anyone?

Shot,

Tim
