south shore board and surf suggestions..?

May be heading to the South Shore to fulfill a 6 month work contract. If this works out, I’m not going to miss the 48 degree water of mid coast Oregon we’ve been enduring this winter…

factoring season and location, will probably look for a racy mini-tanker in the 8’0 MOL range when and if I land…any suggestions for best shops for a good used board?

Also, any suggestions of where to paddle out for a pale, fresh off da plane 59 year old haole that still knows how to get down the line in a hurry…?

for southshore shops

Go up Kapahulu Ave from waikiki towards the mountains (makai)

RV’s Ocean Sports, Blue Planet, Honolulu Fire and some other surfshops specializing in used boards are all along about halfway to the freeway. If you kep going up Kapahulu from waikiki and go past the freeway you can stop over at downing hawaii and talk story with uncle George or Keone. Cippy’s shop is about a block from the waikiki end of kapahulu ave and they usually have some neat used longboards.

Haleiwa Surf n Sea , Tropical Rush and Country Surfboards in Laie on the northshore and
Kimo’s surfhut in Kailua have a good selection of used boards as well.

before you come though check craigslist there’s hundreds of boards avaiable here…

thanks for the shop info…if this happens, will be sure to drop by the downing shop and pay respect…about 12 years ago, ended up using a Keone Downing board that had been left behind with a friend of mine in Tahiti, a 6’10 shaped by his pop…great board that worked better on the reefs then the boards I had arrived with…

.

Great tips from oneula! I would check craigslist like he suggested, chances are you’ll find a better deal there.
