So my kid brother and I are descending upon PR in about a week and I can’t seem to dig up any information relating to getting waves in the summer on the southern coast. Which seems silly. Are these areas of the island unsurfable or are people keeping things quiet or what? I’ve heard about INCHES and the eastern coast, Im curious about the directly south facing coast and its wave possibilities. Are there any rad spots down there? Help a brother out.
South coast doesn’t get much in the way of surf, but it’s a very cool place to explore. I suggest kayaking the mangroves in Guanica, visiting Gilligans Island and checking out the dry forrest. As far as surf goes, you wont likely see much there. You need a good tropical system passing through the Carribean to get anything fun. The north and east side are your best bet for consistency, but you can beat the vibe in the west (Rincon). Depending on where you are, you may be able to take a day trip to Rincon or Luquillo which are the surf towns on either coast. If everywhere else is flat, your last chance to find a ridable wave is in the north.
This is about the best site I have found for describing PR breaks. My Wife and I are planning a trip to PR. We would love to see PR, seems like an awesome place to visit. We are just unsure of the crowds. Heard the breaks are very loudly spoken for. Please let me know how your trip was. I am dying to know the extent of the crowds and localism.
The main breaks can get crowded. If there’s a solid swell you can explore and find uncrowded peaks. There are a lot of guys who freakin rip there and they will be on the good peaks and they will know those waves like the back of their hand. But seek and you will find some nuggets all for yourself. It’s easy to get skunked there (except maybe in the north and when everywhere else is flat those few breaks that still work will be packed). But there are plenty of other fun activities to be done. We used this outfit and they were awesome!
If you are ok with the chance of getting skunked and finding other activities PR is a great place to visit. I’ve been going there regularly for business and for fun for about 7 years now and I still find new fun things to do there. Oh, one warning. If you have never surfed reef before, bring reef booties. You might not use em, but if you cut your foot on the sharp rock reef you will be glad you brought them.
