SP 115 Epoxy

Hello, I just received goods from “Gurit” and they sent me a 1.5 liter Epoxy system to sample. Not a bad little treat considering how $ Epoxy is. Has anyone tried this brand?

I did research it on the net and it seams all is good. Dont know how much it will cost to use yet, that might be the decider after all.

Thank You.

Cheers.

never herd of it

I punched in sp epoxy and got some details there. seam you get a lot more performance out of it if its been post cured.

… your Eli’s dad, is that right??

now living on an island away from all the shit

got a board made from some in the mid 80s…still holding up, though don’t surf it much anymore…seems likek good stuff, but maybe more brittle than the new stuff…as i recall, it cured slower and did need that post cure (non-optional)…

When Beatty set up his first epoxy/eps production in Santa Barbara they were using SP115 epoxy on what they were calling “Hydrofoam”…this was a joint venture with Rod Shaver. Steve Brom and the late John Bradbury were shaping for them.

This is the only time I used or ever saw SP115. Maybe they were getting it from Greg Loehr). This very likely is the case as Greg and CB have interacted and known each other for quite some time. Before that time, Clyde spent time in England setting up an epoxy/eps production for surfboards, then eventually realized this goal in Santa Barbara. After the company folded, Todd Shaver, Rod’s son held onto the hot wiring machine a big beast) to offer foam blanks to us and eventually did some architectural cuttings as well.

As I recall the SP115 was a 2 to 5 ratio, clear epoxy resin. It sanded well and netted a good strength to weight ratio. I can’t even imagine how you came upon this stuff.

Greg, can you shed more light on this?

Fiberglass Hawaii’s Epoxy is the best I’ve used. I use it without a surfacing agent for the hot coat and it sands really well.

Aloha DeadShaper:

I used to work for SP Systems in a previous life and the epoxy certainly did not come from Resin Research, it was formulated on the Isle of Wight in the UK. I remember having some interesting conversations with the chemist that created it way back then, this was a long time ago. I’m surprised that it is still around because I had heard it was discontinued. It really was pretty nice stuff to work with, I was very surprised when they stopped bringing it into the States.

I actually worked on some projects with Rod and Todd and for a short time Clyde actually made some epoxy parts that I had a hand in designing, using SP epoxies. These had nothing to do with surfing though!

Most of SP Systems business is geared towards high tech boat construction and they really do have some pretty amazing stuff, was a fun place to work.

I don’t know much about what has happened at the company since it was bought by Gurit a number of years ago.

Hand Shaper…

Thanks for the background. Both CB and I have had our day designing and/or manufacturing “widgets”…you know…some gizmo you make to put $ in your pocket…his was bicycle helmets for a time. Mine was a raised arched platform for pet bowls that also doubled as a houseplant stand…go figure.

The significant thing about doing my widget was it connected me to working with a mold company in China, and also furniture builders that are primarily located in the southern U.S. along with a huge concrete company that was located in Arizona. It was a nice experience in learning how to design and develop and get to market a general consumer product that depending on the version, could end up in big box stores like K Mart or Costco, a pet shop, department or home improvement store or by mail order. Live n learn, all in the name of making a buck.
