Spackle and color mix

I am curious if anyone has mixed up spackle with acrylic color? What does it look like? I know that the premise of spackle is to fill the holes but I have been think of trying this with yellow

yes i have and it actually looks decent. instead of thinning the spackle with water i used tempera paint. and i gave the board two or three coats to get as much of an even color as possible. very interesting result - almost like deep yellow wood grain. i can send you a few pics if you PM me.

I would have responded that it is not a good idea. But your results were good. Love to see it. I was just thinking that it would be hard to apply it evenly, particularly on the rails, and the result would be splotchy. did you tape off the stringer?

i thought i’d give it a shot and was quite pleased with the result. didn’t tape anything off, just spackled like normal with my yellow tempura paint mixture. yes, it’s streaked but it’s a good look. again, like a wood grain. the color was more opaque where the spackle was thicker, like on the rails. i imagine if you gave it three or four coats you could achieve a nice, uniform color. but at that point it probably makes more sense to just spray the color on!

i’ll work on posting up some pics today. we’ve got stormy conditions in Santa Cruz.

I remember searching the archive a while back, trying to learn

all about spackle. DAP Fast and Final was the highly recommended one.

Last week, went to buy some spackle, DAP Fast and Final doesnt

exist , at least not anymore.

So I bought some DAP ‘Crackshot’ Spackling Paste.

To its detriment the tube says: ideal for dents in metal doors and trim.

I assume it will work well, unless someone knows otherwise.

You can find Dap Fast n’ Final @ any Lowes dept. store… or just order the tubs online.

This idea works the same as resin + pigment to seal a blank (no fillers) - comes out looking like a resin swirl, streaky but cool and abstract.

Hey kirk

I would like to see a pic of how it turned out.

I have been thinking about doing it with two slightly different shades of brown.

Maybe try to achieve a rustic or aged woodgrain effect.

aha Loews.

For the record,

1 Ace Hardware

and 1 Home Depot didnt have it.

Plus one guy from Home Depot who had been stocking that aisle

for the last 3 years never heard of it.

Hey Otis,

I’m not sure if these stores are in Frisco, but I believe I get mine at Anawalt Lumber.

You can also try www.dap.com or they have a “questions” line 888-DAP-TIPS(sorry, I don’t have my phone around to translate)

amazon.com has the quart buckets for $9.58 with free shipping if you can’t find it local.

I found a ton of sources just by doing a google search of “fast n final”.

Give it a try

Hope that helps

Kirk,

Have you glassed that board yet?

Dave_D

yes. went triple 6 oz. and rode it all summer with no issues.
