spackle and tints

I was just finishing off a blank, giving it a last polish and making sure it was 100% scratch free to maximise my chances of pulling off a dark blue tint, when my little-finger finger nail caught a spot on the deck and ripped a quarter inch chunk of foam.

Not a happy bunny!

The divot is pretty small but deep. If I spackle it, will it glare through once the tints done?

Cheers in advance

It will.

Anything different from foam is visible…

That’s bad…

I guess you should accept the deeper spot on the tint, that would be the smallest offense.

I just guess… or try to.

fill it…glass it…and live with it.

look at any shop board up close, and you’ll see plenty of little spots where some funk in the foam made for a blemish in the tint.

it’s really no biggie. and chances are that no one will ever notice unless they’re looking for it.

if it’s somewhere that you can place a logo or some cosmetic pinlining to obscure it, go for it.

otherwise, i really wouldn’t even give it a second thought.

and next time, keep those fingernails trimmed, and don’t touch the finished shape without gloves. easier to prevent problems than to fix them.

Take a heat gun to it, you’ll be amazed how much you can expand and pull out a dent of scratch…it’s poly right? not EPS…

he said he ripped out a 1/4" chunk, and deep.

i don’t know of a heat gun ever working that kinda magic before.

Is your shop vac still full of foam dust?

(hint, hint)

Right, but you might be able to make it only 1/8 in.

Or better yet, just put a seashell in it.

Thanks for all ye responses!

Resinhead: I’m guessing ithe hole’s a bit big for the heatgun trick, but its one I’d never heard of before, so thanks for bringing it up!

So I’ve trimmed my finger nails, I’ll try packing it full of foam dust (cheers benny) and I’ll glass… and then I’ll ignore the blemish

If only the bl**dy temperature here would rise above 12c. And this is English summer?!

Heatgun…huh…I’ve heard that one someplace before ???

Spackle…you’re going to see it !!!

Try this…Sugar and lam resin…just a speck of resin …you want it crumbly…sand flush before it rocks up.

If you do this correctly it won’t show…at all !!!

This is a tip from Jim Phillips.

p.s. Thank god for English weather! If it’d been hotter and drier I would’ve done it already

There’s a couple other ways to do this , but the sugar trick is the easiest and quickest way to achieve the correct balance needed to get a even/flowing foam look.Herb

do you mean sweet?
