"Sparky" Scheufele Concave Nose Model

Aloha.

I have a “Sparky” 9’8" Concave model. Having read what I can on the net about Sparky, I have come to the conclussion that this board is probably pre his “Inter-Island” time as a shaper (1960/61).

Can anyone in Hawaii help out with info. Some of you guys who knew Sparky and may be able to shed some light.

Cheers Paul (New Zealand)

I’d guess it to be from around 1965-66, if it has a concave under the nose similar to noserider models of the period. Your photos do not show the concave. Nose concaves were pretty much nonexistent before the '65 Morey Noseriding contest and the debut of the Hobie Noserider. The D fin also places it at 66 or older, which really narrows it down to a brief window.

He may have been doing a few boards under his own name as a side project during those years.

I suspect that it is more like a 1962/63 era board.

EDIT:  Sammy makes a good point, above, about the nose rider contest.        Brewer was doing tail concaves as early as 1962, and was in full flower by 1963.     There was an undeserved mystique, about concaves, at that time.

Bill, do you know of anyone doing nose concaves prior to 65? There were certainly folks messing around with tail scoops, slot bottoms, etc prior to that. But I don’t know of anyone doing a nose concave like the Hobie before '65

No, I don’t.    Given the buzz Brewer was generating, back then with his concave tails, I can well imagine someone touting a concave at the other end of the board, as being somehow special.      I notice that it was not touted as a ‘‘nose rider.’’      Simply as having a nose concave.

this board is from when he was at  inter-Island, the Logo is the outline from II logo, Sparky ran a nose riding contest at Sand Island, Reno won it

As far as I know, Sparky always worked for Interisland. Not sure when Mickey Lake sold it, or when Barry bought. There may have been a period when the shop wasn’t operating. Sparky made a lot of boards with that Sparky label. I’ve seen the Ala Moana Park boyz with them.

sharkcountry,

I believe that Sparky also shaped for the Greg Noll Shop in Honolulu and did some short boards for Surfline Hawaii on Piikoi street.

before he went to, was picked up by Inter-Island, Sparky was independent, his logos were lettering from the hardwarestore that you would but on a  store front or mail box. He was very popular for what would have been an underground guy at the time, around the same time was a shop that popped up in Wahiawa, “Fred’s Surf Shop”, his guns were pretty durn nice for the era

Thanks all, looking at the inter-island logo I could see the connection but didn’t know which came first .

What I have read is saying that Sparky was one of the first to play around with a concave nose, was also the first to build solid glass skegs and also speed fins.

Looking at the boards profile rails and nose, it certainly looks to be around that 62 63 era and not the wider nose models of say 65 .

I will post a couple more pics.

Your input is very much appreciated.

Sparky was part of the Greg Noll Hawaii team for a bit . Probably built some boards for that label in association with Charlie Galento. Galento ran the Noll Hawaii operation.

Here’s a Hang Ten ad from the mid 60s featuring the “Noll Hawaii Team”, with Charlie, Sparky, Bobby Cloutier, and another guy whose name escapes me at the moment

Sammy,

Dennis Terracina?

Could be, puamana.

This scan cropped out the names. If I find the mag I’ll know who that is on the far left. I’ll have a look later today.
