Speaking of large boards......

Carve,

Insane and classic story. I’m guessing that you’re riding the wave front side like the Laird picture. What does the paddle do when you’re sticking it into the wave? Can’t it suck you over like if you “catch a crab” like in crew.

I was using my short paddle which is 48" long end to end. The one Laird has in the photo is around 74" long or even longer. I take off in the kneeling position then stand up. I get way more speed and leverage with the shorter paddle closer to the water like my One Man Canoe. This actually is my one of my One Man canoe paddles that I modified slightly.

If you look at the picture of Laird and chopped almost 3’ off his paddle it would be close to what mine would look like… I have a 72" Stand Up paddle and its just to big to really use to help me surf the wave better. Laird on the other hand is a freak of nature. He could surf a barn door with a 2x4 for a paddle!!! Haha!!

Carve,

After you get into the wave, what happens if you don’t use the paddle. I guess it helps with steering but does it help with speed?

I’ll score some waves next month in Honolulu when I go out there. Longboarding unless my friend loans me a shorter board. No tankers or paddles for me, it would be Pearl City in bigger waves for sure.

Because this board does not “Squrit” out of turns like a smaller longboard I sometimes use the paddle to generate speed to make or get to another section. I saw Bonga Perkins doing it one day at Haleiwa and I was thinking ahhhhhhhh, that’s how you do it!

Carve,

I’m stoked to see that board- I’ve been dabbling with the stand up paddle deal for a few years, at least when I can borrow a tandem board. I bought a surfboard paddle at Island Paddler last year and now want a 12 footer bad! (maybe one of those Parmenter beasts) It’s a different learning curve that’s for sure- I still have a hell of a time with whitewater but ti’s all worth it when you get going. Where are you riding on Oahu (other than North Shore)? I’ll be there next week and could at least check the spots out. Again, that board is a beauty- feel free to keep adding pictures and if you get a copy of Glass Love there’s a little footage of Skip Frye riding his 12’ cross country board.

I try to stay close to home and surf but I will make the drive to town on occassion. I go to Kaisers, Threes, the Park or sometimes Habush. I love Maili Pt. I have a few East side favorites and Westside favorites but all of the above will only be if thee is nothing on the North Shore. Even when its giant and onshore we have spots to surf fun re-forms and stuff on the North Shore…

Its actually pretty good right now, smaller than yesterday but still 15’+ faces… The winds are getting light and its gonna be clean… I tweaked my arm/shoulder yesterday so I’m letting it rest for tomorrow. I know my good wave was part of it but so were the drillings I took… I’m getting old!! Haha!!

Aloha

Thanks Carve,

I’m even more excited about getting there now! I’ve got a nice Downing board stashed at a friend’s house so I’ll be grabbing that and heading west…

I usually surf Maili when I’m there if it’s do-able so I’ll look out for you in the water- should be easy to spot on that tanker, especially on the North Shore!
