Speed Surfing challenge

Here’s what I’ll be ridin’. 8’3" twin with my fins and a spin off of Herb’s chargers to amp it up that extra little bit. All we need is some way to accurately measure who’s goin’ the fastest. If we don’t have that we’ll both take off on the same wave and see who’s laggin’.

No mushy shit man, it’s gotta be some frei ght train rights!

Now all we gotta do is orgainize it for a day Rincon when it’s double over head and get Surf Mag to show up with Rat Boy, Chappy, Peter Mel and some of the boys that really rip.

So come on down.

Good surfin’, Rich

or sewers?

Rincon would be nice…Rich got some c-coat put away for you. Will you be at the event this year?Herb

Hey Herb,

Good to see you come out of the tube even if just for a moment.

I’m gonna try and make it just for the chit-chat if nothing else. It depends on my work schedule. Sometimes I’m right in the middle of a plumbing job and I can’t get away.

I’m gonna send John Mellor a center fin for a fun board for the raffle – looks like there will be some great raffle prices this year.

I’ll look forward to the C-coat and the secret recipe.

Check in with Tom O’Keefe and take those feathers I sent him for a ride. Put 'em to the ultimate test Brah – then shoot me a performance report.

What’s the break like down there at the Swaylocks annual like?

Mahalo, Rich

The challenge is already on, Herb, so let’s hear some numbers. Roy

Halcyon, there are at least two possible ways of measuring your speed: video analysis, and gps. By the way, you can’t go faster by name dropping, that’s mouth speed not surfing speed. Good Luck! Roy

“What’s the break like down there at the Swaylocks annual like?”

Rich -

Sand Dollar has lefts, rights and close outs. Open to direct west. Catches souths and norths as they wrap around corners. Fluctuates with tide changes. Can get good… mostly average though. Usually enough peaks for people to spread out. Far enough out of the way that there aren’t many locals that live around there. More punchy spots north and south attract more of a hard core crew.

how was that swell…it was windy 10ft here

Hi Cheyne, we had one nice overhead offshore session out of the whole swell. It was a matter of taking advantage of a brief window of opportunity. Were you planning to go to a big wave spot in the South Island?

PS my new (temporary) avatar animation is extracted from a wave where I was doing 27mph.

Ok Roy, surely if you’re making GIF’s of the footage, then you should be able post an actual clip for us to watch. If you don’t have anywhere to host it then I’m sure someone here wouldn’t mind hosting it for you.

As someone said earlier, we’ve all seen enough surf vids to have a good idea of what is fast and what isn’t, so I’m really keen to see your footage.

Regards,

Matt.

Sure Matt,

I have been trying to get a clip posted but I must be doing some small thing wrong. I will try to get it sorted. Don’t expect to see anything unusual though. I am not claiming to be doing anything radical, just cruising and going for distance.

Although you might have seen a lot of surfing, if you haven’t been measuring speed all these years then you will have trouble evaluating the actual speed of a clip by eyeballing it. Who knows how fast those fast rides you have been seeing really are? It could be that many of them are in the 30mph zone.

My claim is just a starting point for conversation, and all I am saying really is that I have generated a lot of speed (27mph) on some sub par waves.

Regards, Roy

But Roy, you quoted your wife as saying that you appear to be going 3x faster than other surfers. If that is the case then I reckon it will be easy to tell that you’re going FAST!!

Sure it may be hard to tell if you’re doing 27mph or whatever, but 3x faster should be pretty noticeable.

Regards,

Matt.

Or you could try one of these…

Hicksy

Matt,

To do that I would have to show you how slow the other guys are going! They are really slow. I have sussed the glitch and can show you one speedy section tomorrow. All the other goobers were just jumping off their boards or pulling out when faced with the tiny closeout.

I knew that three times faster comment would come back to haunt me. Just remember that I didn’t claim it, three times further might be closer to the mark!

cheers, Roy

Wow, is that what it appears to be? It might be good for a tandem river board.

I know it’s getting slightly off track but it still relates to speed. There’s a website www.powerboarding.com that shows some of the latest models. I remember seeing one at a surf show in Sydney in the early 80s. I could see you nutting out how to put one into your boards. Just thought I’d throw that one into the frey. Almost like putting 2 spiders in a jar, shake 'em up and make them fight…

Hicksy

Hello Matt, here’s a 25mph+ run on a piece of slop. Roy

http://www.woodensurfboardbuilder.com/swayclip2.mpg

Roy,

That certainly doesn’t look very fast at all!!!

I reckon I probably hit that sort of speed every time I go out. 25mph?? Either that’s miscalculated or we all go much faster than we think.

Regards,

Matt.

Matt, like I said you are probably going much faster than you think! There was no mistake. Roy

PS Just like you said to me, the proof is in the pudding. I have heard lots of mouth flapping so where’s your video or gps recorded speed to back up your claim? The ball is in your court so get busy.

You know what Roy – I just couldn’t let the name dropping accusation pass. If you want to know about speed you gotta have the best surfers. That’s pretty fuckin’ obvious - duh -

I’m not dropping names. I make fins for some of these people. You live in the past. Your technology is a century old. All you ever do is talk up you own shit. You have more to say about nothing than anyone on the forum, so keep it up. We are all so very entertained. I’d like to put you up for some kind of an award. Whatyasayboys? What kind of award shall we give Roy-Boy?

Everytime you try and call me on something you prove once again that you don’t know what the (clearing my throat)is going on. I get pissed and the only other thing that comes to my mind is insulting name calling, which I’m not about to stopp to. I’m not interested your idiotic speed challenge. As far as I’m concern the only way to know who’s going fast is exactly the way I discribed it earlier in the tread. So go ride whatever you want to. I could care less about you gps or anything else. It’s all just salt on the pie and it tastes real bad.

I won’t be back on this thread. You going so slow I can not believe it, but as we know speed is all relative.

I don’t know what you’ll ever prove but go ahead where ever you going just don’t include me.

I’m out, Rich

Excuse me for saying so Halcyon, but I don’t mind at all if you don’t participate. By the way if speed is relative how come they still give out speeding tickets?

Roy

PS 25mph + may be slow but not as slow as the others on that particular day.

PPS I have still posted the fastest speed on this forum at
