Here is the board i was working on.
Love your board…nice finish…im a shaper but am having to cover artwork at the moment. One problem im having is the pin lines, How do you get yours so crisp??? All the best
The color has great depth…Nice work…
great work Austin, keep 'em coming…what type of pinline did you use? ink, resin??
great color, fine pinline, please describe your finish/polish technique for us. TIA
Yes, please post some tips/techniques. My last encounter with pigment pretty much left me on the floor of my work area, shivering in the fetal position. Nice colors bu the way.
Austin - Great job and THANKS for the detailed explanation!!!
Great looking. Like to know how you did the colors,
First off, we did the pinlines with an airbrush for this board. We laid down 1/4 inch masking tape freehand. Then one on both sides of that tape. Pull up the center and paint with airbrush on top of the sanded hotcoat. As for the color we just blasted the resin with pigment. This board was 1 small bucket of light blue, 1 small bucket of dark blue, 1 small bucket of black. Those are used to put down the initial lines of color. The first color to hit the cloth wins. Then we had a large bucket of the base blue. This blue is the “flood color”. This goes on last and is used to laminate the rest of the board. When pouring the first colors get someone to help you hold out the laps. This is important so you get color on the deck side of the rails. The more you “work” the resin the more of a mud you get. Also if you press harder with the sqeegee on the bands of color the flood blue will pull off showing the under color. It helps to have a few sqeegees on hand so you have a fresh start a few times throughout the lamination. Our polish procedure…First off during the winter its tough for glosses to kick, so go gloss with 1/3 hotcoat resin. Sand down your rails bands using 400. Sand the deck with 400 and the bottom with a new sheet of 400. sand the deck with 600 then the bottom with the same then the top with the same then the bottom once more. Buff with super-duty rubbing compound…pretty much forever. When you think youre done, 15 more minutes should be good. Clean it off and use a wax, then buff to a shine. I think that covered it all. http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards
Nice polish. Haven’t you guys heard of 800, 1000, 1200 W+D? It would save you that extra buffing work, less heat too.
it never works as good as just more time with rubbing compound with me. http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards
