Splitboards (travelboards) 2011

Imagine Eco boards are sadly not being produced right now (I’ve been waiting for about a year).

& The Pope Bisect is made by a company headed by someone with a terrible reputation.

So where are the splitboards these days?

A few people have mentioned it: http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1008576?page=1

But I don’t generally see them discussed much. Why?

Certainly a hard thing to put together, what if the hard part was pre manufactered?

I’m willing to pay £500 up front for a board I can travel with without paying £100 airline fees every time I fly, surely that would gain some interest?

In germany we have a small market for them: http://www.mes-surfboards.com/de/boards.php

But they are really rare. Another problem is that MES is well known for wakeboards and not for surfboards what scares many people to buy from them.

Timely post, I’m working on one right now!   I’m trying to streamline my process, making some good progress.   Eventually I’d like to offer a service where I split your board for you.  If I do any production boards, it will be with boards shaped by Jeff of Spindrift Surfboards as before.   He’s already got countless inqiries from the couple that we’ve done together, so it’s definitely in my interest to make it work.

yea, a huge market lies untapped, and why limit to two piece boards…why not sectional boards that can build both a shortie and a step-up by just changing out a secton or two.

Morey-Popes stranglehold patent is expiring, so don’t be surprised if a company like Burton/CI comes along and nails the market- probably the only “surfboard” company with the R&D and venture capitol to pull it off.

Imagine rolling up to the airpoprt counter with your…rolling 3x2x2 case containing two board configurations…

hard to visualize a less soulful craft, however, when factoring absurd airline fees, transport issues, damaged surfboards en route…why not?

Yeah, a three component board with two different tail sections would be ideal for travel.  I made something similar with a detatchable pintail section, and while it works well, one would need design and molding resources beyond my capabilities to make a true multi-part swiss army surfboard.

I wish I were in Texas, i'd love to work on this with you. I've got a lot of milling and some machining experience. This is an exciting idea and one with legs. I think things could be accomplished with abs plastic milled mating pieces coupled with the panel connectors to achieve the "Swiss" Army effect. What if the stiffener rod were milled with a little play and not tight to allow a type of scarf joint and the rod would have an inflatable bladder that expands to make it a very tight fit? Trying to keep this simple as always is the hard part.

Any news? Anyone working on this in Europe?

Try to keep up!

More to come!

Congrats!!

$700 waiting for you from the UK if you want to fund another trip. All through June I travelled all the way from Vigo round to San Sebastian and I really would have liked to have had a board with me!

Well… it looks like the only option is to make my own.

Darn shame I travel so much I got nowhere to work on splitting an old board!

Does no one want to sell me a board?

I have a system that works quite well for splitting boards in two. Many years of work . The problem is the acceptance of the manufacturers and distribution. No pro is going to ride one so mass acceptance is improbible. Most surfers wont even buy a board that suits their needs let alone one that suits practicallity. Afterall its mostly fashion. What percentage of surfshops sell surfboards??? not that many.

There is an extra cost involved in the added work . Most surfers are pretty tight forking out extra bucks to try something new is a big hurdle.

Once people see a board in two peices there is a negative trigger in the brain relating to a broken board. Thats a dificult thing to get over.

For some reason i cant paste the link here, but if you go to youtube and look up " doing the bolt" my user name is oiysh . You can see me riding the board and putting it together.  Or there are some pics at bumbledust.com

I doubt there is a better system than mine. Save yourself the bother of trying to do something that has already been done.

Thank you

I didn’t get a response from that email. Well, I guess it was 7 years ago! Likewise, they don’t make videos like that anymore! It’s almost cheesy enough to be even better than good.

I’d really like to be able to just buy a stringer kit.
