HI Barry, its just a picture! Sorry I drew it backwards! Well Maybe. The grain of the wood tells me which end to start at. Nose or tail. I always go tail to nose in the flat before I get to the curve. Just a habbit. Helps if you have a tail kick, Hurts if you have a s deck. But either way, the grain is going to dictate. Shave down the grain, rather than bite into it. Then as the nose curve starts, I still go tail to nose., just to blend in the curve. Then when the grain tells be to stop, because it starts biting in rather than shaving, I switch and go nose to tail.
But my point in the post is to have two planers, adjusted slightly differently. A little more blade exposed for where the nose flip tightens. Its all about following the radius, and reading the grain.
My grand total was $17.00 fed x shipping two days for my foamez spoke shave. Figure ten bucks for a quik shipping. But man, if it can help me make a board I want- then it’s worth it. Plus I plan to make ten variations…ltr on!!#!!
iwanna see this board
Well, check back! I’m you like the direction I’m going. It’s a culmination of personal ideas, and suggestions from some folk’s from this wonderful site! Tommorow I’m cutting in tail kick and concaves, on the next day I will foil out the s deck…my version.
Now just imagine how much better a curved base Wil-Kro razor planer or other curved base planer is. By the way, with a fresh 20 cent blade it will make curly Q shavings of foam just like a regular plane does to the stringer.
You’ve mentioned you’re cash strapped…well you paid $10 too much for that spoke shave.
Most of those tools can be sourced for less either locally or on the web. I paid less than $7 for the exact same spokeshave at a local hardware store. There are even tools on those sites that you can find on the shelf of the local Harbor Freight.
“The shipping was warp speed though @ ten so… well, the only thing I need now is that foam padding used for finish work sanding. T c Jim”
For the pads. Go to your local Wally Mart. They have supplies for re-upulstering chairs and usually have a couple different foams to choose from. They also have the egg crate foam matress covers that are very useful for this type of stuff as well as padding shaping racks. Then walk over to the craft department and get yourself a can of spray adhesive. Cut to size and add your favorite abrasive and you are set.
Suck ??? they rock, I use mine on a daily basis, never have a problem with them NOT being able to hold the line, if anything, I’ve been able to get the nose rocker line looking even better. 2 of mine are Stanely # 185, the bed angle is adjustable, hundred or more years old tools, got them at the O’side swap meet for 5 buck each, list on antique tool sites for around 200 bucks. Unless the curvature is super elf shoe, I angle the blade to the work, this extends the base length and gives a truer line, plus the blade entering the wood at an angle shears the grain rather than plowing straight into the wood. I ground the blade with an arc in it also, so there is no catching the corners of the blade in the foam and creating more work for myself
I use the same one as oldphart shaper.
I found it a lil too big and I cut the “nose” and “tail” of it (from 2.5" to 1.5").
Also have a wooden one and a spoke shave.
If you guys like those little block planes you’ve got to try one of these. Trust me you will never go back. I have two. One set up flat and the other set up curved. They go for about $10 on eBay.
Tip of the day:
Make sure you take the blade corners on the spoke shave and round them off a bit. This little trick will keep you from tearing the foam on accident.
Then you can take your surform and true up your outline (*)
I’m looking forward to seeing this build as it unfolds! I can hardly wait until we get to the glassing discussions.

Jay - I did two more steps ( cut kick/ started rail bands!) Build is moving in leaps now…zoooOOOMMM!
Mike Daniel’s - each and every thing I tried you said -worked sweet! I even noticed my spoke shave cut better balanced at a angle…used a part of the corner blade…JimtheGenius! HIGH FIVE SIR! I prefer spoke shave on nose flip! I tried my one inch trim plane -just didn’t feel right. Blade poke n out -just slightly worked best.

Very old sayin’ from the day of those blades Me’s stupid question, they still make those things ? looks bitchen.
I’ve been fondling this guy at FGH kinda spendy 45 bucks, anyone tryed one?
ya i’ve got one, they work well but are a pain to adjust, being just a single blade with a wedged-in fit…
The Wil-Kro plane is no longer made but there is always a few of them listed on eBay. There are 4 or 5 of them up there right now. If you search Razor Planer on eBay you will see other brands and designs as well. As for the blades you can get them at your local grocery store. A 5 pack of blades was about $2. That’s 10 fresh razor sharp edges for $2. That’s hard to beat. Keep in mind that the blades are double sided so you can just turn the blade around in seconds.
