I am in the process of making a board for myself and thought I would have a crack at spraying some colour on it, I installed the Fusion boxes as normal no problems and after reading a couple of threads on here found it was fine to spray straight onto the boxes, the blank looks fine however the spray seems a bit thick in places on the boxes, will this effect the bond when I laminate it, if so should I sand then down a bit?
I’ve done painted boxes this the same way. With some backgrounds (usually darker), the board just looks better because the boxes are almost unnoticeable. Especially when the fins are in.
That looks like too much paint to me though. You want to see all of the “corduroy” on the box in order to give the glass a better mechanical bond. Tape off the foam, sand/scrape the lines on the box, then spray it again - just try not to glob on the paint this time. Haha. Board looks fun, good luck dude.
I believe some of what you are seeing there is the resin from the install. I wouldn’t mess with it. Just glass it and have fun. Those boxes aren’t going anywhere.
I’m with Reverb. Boxes get installed after paint job.
I’ve had major problems with heavy black or red paint…hope you had long dry times between layers of paint and you are a really good glasser. I love your art work. If you are doing poly resin I will have a nightmare tonight in your honor…because I will never glass with poly over black or red. never. I will pay someone else to do it…Ray
I’ve had major crystallization problems with Red and Black paint. Your surfboard has a very heavy coat of black paint…I’m backyard. If you asked me to glass that surfboard I would say no…It’s a problem waiting to happen…plenty of pros on swaylocks can help you…Ray
Just a thought for the future. On a couple of boards I’ve taped off and sprayed black krylon on top of the sanded glass job and then sealed with acrylic as per usual. Comes out really sharp looking compared to paint on foam under the glass with fewer pitfalls. Perhaps next time, do the blue on the foam and the black on top of the glass.
