I don’t have any airbrushing equipment and I want to paint my blank (one solid color). I know most spray paint is an enemy of foam, but I thought I saw an earlier post that some foam/resin-compatible paint is available in spray cans. Where can I get it? Is this water-based? Or is there another alternative? Thanks for any leads, deeb

I have used water based paints and painted on the shaped blank with a brush (really cool custom art can be done this way). have fun with it.

P.S. TAPE OFF YOUR STRINGER!!! before you paint. It helps the resin to blank bond.use 1/8",1/4" or whatever size tape width you need to cover the wood. You can purchase it at any good surfboard supply shop or auto paint supply shop.

Thanks! I was wondering if taping the stringer was a must. Also, I didn’t even know refillable spray cans existed. Since I don’t have an air compressor, that looks like my best bet for now. I should probably stick to water-based paint, right? And I’m assuming a lighter coat is better for the bond, correct? Thanks again guys!

Thanks again guys!..I use liquitex or aerotex acyrlic paints there waterbased and dry permenent. Some people use poster paint,watercolors,waterbased/waterproof inks. Test your paints before you use it for real!!!Herb.
try using Golden Fluid Acrylics, they’re high quality, and unlike most acrylics already in a liquid/sprayable state, so you don’t lose color intensity by having to water down regular acrylic paints. you can find them at good art supply stores…

Yeh Herb, I wanted to get spray pins to dry faster and figured if I’m gonna thin the paint with water, how about alcohol? Damn, that was quick!!!

Refillable aerosol cans must be filled with compressed air via schraeder valve. If you don’t have a near by neighbor with an air compressor, get a cheapie tire inflator at Pep Boys or somewhere like that. Otherwise, many trips to the corner gas station putting quarters in their air machine. What ever happened to free air and water? Hope this helps, Old Longboarder

Harbor Freight., I Just received new ad in the mail at work this morning. They have both the 12v inflator ($10.97) and the refillable aerosol spray can ($7.97) on sale this week! Aloha, Old Longboarder

I’ll post any problems in the future (if any arise)
Dewey, watch out for air in your lam! That will also cause pitting in your hotcoat.(I know i’ve done a few)
Aloha, Old Longboarder Just made a trip to Harbor Freight. Great store with great prices! (the retail store that is). Bought the refillable spray can and tested it with my old tire inflator (the kind you hook up to the cig lighter). Works great! I bought a bunch of other stuff too. Now I have to pick out my colors. I think I’ll try to find the Golden Fluids. Thanks again, everyone. deeb
Dewey, watch out for air in your lam! That will also cause pitting in your > hotcoat.(I know i’ve done a few) You definetly know your stuff, no sooner did I read your response that I noticed a bunch of tiny air bubbles under the lam coat(I just laminated it this past weekend). Will this lead to major delams? I had originally intended to use opaque pigment in the hot coat because I believe there is less chance of delams, but my local surf supply owner advised me against it. He claimed it is very difficult to get an “even flow” when pigmenting. He spoke of streaking and irregularities, is there much truth to this, and if you wouldn’t mind, could you lend some of your expertise to myself and others who may need advise in the tinting/coloring area? Thanks again

What can help is to mix up a 4oz cup of lam before hotcoating (on the hot side)and with a bondo blade/old credit card, push as much into the original lam coat, then hot coat.I know I’M TO LATE to tell you this(sorry)you can also…gulp…double hotcoat, and sand. The worst that might happen is that your lam will crystalize under the lam,and distort the colors.CAN IT DELAM,sure even the best paint will delam.I’ve got to go now (family bus.),but I will come back at the top of the page to explain color tints and opagues then,GOOD LUCK.,Herb.
