Spraying Equipment Recommendations

I am thinking about buying a spray gun and compressor, I don’t want to buy the very best on the market because I am only shaping for fun not for profit. But I do want a good system that will last and provide solid good coats. If you have a good gun

and compressor setup could you please share what it is and where you got it, especially if it was purchased from a store on the internet. Thanks.

I did check the archives, but new equipment comes out every day so I want the latest products included.

Hey,

Definitely get a compressor with a good size tank. I use an 18 gallon. I paid about $180 for it. Anything much smaller and you’ll have to wait for it to refill too often. And a wide spray gun from lowes or whater $30. And also get a water filter for the line that takes out any moisture in the air.

Are you in nyc by chance?

Yes,

I’m about to move to Brooklyn. Just got an offer on my house today. Once it sells I’ll be on my way. Probably a month or two. I’m planning on setting up a shaping/glassing studio. If you’re interesting let me know. I have all the tools, etc.

For a gun, i’d reccomend a gravity feed gun, especially if your going to be spraying 2pak clear coats, as you’ll waste less paint.

If your spraying large areas, like clear coating a whole board, then you’ll need a gun with a 1.5 tip or 1.4 tip or similar.

I have a gun with a 0.5 tip, which is basically the next step up from an air brush, it’s great for doing graphics, but it would be hard to spray a whole board.

I have a 1.5 tip for clear coats and full board sprays.

You could go for something around 0.8 to 1.0 tip, and you could spray both pretty fine and pretty large… although it won’t do either of the jobs as good as the appropriate sized gun.

I’ve never tried HVLP (High volume low pressure) guns, but I don’t think they are necessary for surfboard use.

Try and find an automotive “touch up gun”, they still come easily in 1.5 tips, but they have a much lower air consumption, so it will be fine with a little 2 HP compressor with a small tank.

The big auto spray guns deliver a crap-load of paint, good if you wanna spray a whole car in 5 minutes!!

I’m not a really experienced sprayer, but I went through all this a while ago, and this is what I found wrt board building.

Hope this helps

Kit

get the biggest tank and highestcfm rating you can afford!!

trust me in the long run you will thank me!

i bought a small 10ltr one to start out you get about 3 seconds spray then i bought a 50ltr 7-10secs of spray now have a 200ltr and can run air tools and spray continuous if you are looking to do this for a few years go bigger.

there is nothing worse than having to wait for your tank to refill mid spray.
