http://www.harboursurfboards.com/popup_shaping.html I trying to track down some spring clamps for holding down templates as I router. One’s with heaps of reach. The guy on the Harbour Surfboard video has some with a real long reach. Just wondering if anyone knows where to get some like that?

I use these Vise-Grips along with the large clamp types.
When you use half templates you need a long reach so that the clamp will be on the other side of the board so that it won’t be in the way of the router. I add 1 1/2" dia x 1/8" Masonite pads with grip tape on them to increase the size of the clamps pad. Choose long enough ones to reach as far as you need.
Thanks.
To me they look like modifications of the spring clamps that easternpacific posted
I love my vice grips !!!
I use exactly what Bill posted. Fast and strong. Don’t break when you drop them. I have two that have about a 5 inch reach and one with a 12 inch reach. I orginally bought them for welding but they are an awesome tool to own. Don’t buy cheap imported copies from the tool store. Get the real deal and they will last you a life time.

Looking around I found this deal on the 24" version “Vise Grip 24SP”, which was almost twice the price elsewhere. Thanks for the headsup on this style clamp Bill since I was actually looking for something better than what I currently have . This price is probably an error on the part of the online store but who knows.
Howzit Keen, I think they are 2 different clamps for different applications. The ones E-pacman linked to look like they are for wood work and the all metals ones are used for welding.Aloha,Kokua
the value of the vice grips kine is to set the tension range.
the springy thingys are more ferocious the more you
spread em wide
whereas the vice grips can be set to hold it hard enough without going overboard…and squash foam you may not wanna sqatch.
cool application although I’ve qwned em for thirty years I never thought to use em for template holdin downin.
bitchin call.
…ambrose…
mine are old an rusty .

Consider your use and buy the shortest ones you can use. Glue on larger pads the ends (I use 1.5" circles of masonite) and put some grip tape on them so they won’t slide around. I use both the spring type and the clamp type. The spring ones I use when using full templates as they don’t reach far enough for half templates. The spring clamps are faster to use in production but will gouge the foam worse. If you use them for routing templates find a placement for the clamp that will allow you to make it around half the board without moving the clamp. Then move the clamp once and do the other side. Moving the clamp too much is a hassle and more dangerous when using a long router bit.

In Master Shaper II it looks like Jim fashioned a spring clamp with a long reach. It appears to be a 3 or 4" spring clamp that has conduit welded to the business end. Wish I thought of it!
If your routing on a sanded hot coat why not stick the templates down with 3M spray mount, like probox. works great
For single fin boxes I don’t use templates anymore, just masking tape as a guide,
Use the thinest bit you have (i use as 5mm bit) 1st pass very shallow just to remove glass, say 2mm, lowest speed setting, go very slow, start with the stringer, then across the width at the ends to form a “I” shape, then the sides.
Next pass 4mm taking down stringer then foam be very careful in this these parts, same as before
Then just take down the whole stringer to required depth, say 6-8, 5 mm passes, leave the foam, then run the shank of the bit (the part above the blade) around the glass (which acts as the template)
It take a lot of sensitivity and concerntration but I did 7 this way before lunch yesterday and they all came out perfect.
If your not to experinced with router best use a template or practice a few on scrape foam to get a feel for the tool.
