The SR-71 featured chines, a pair of sharp edges leading aft from either side of the nose along the fuselage. These were not a feature on the early A-3 design; Dr. Frank Rodgers of the Scientific Engineering Institute, a CIA front organization, discovered that a cross-section of a sphere had a greatly reduced radar reflection, and adapted a cylindrical-shaped fuselage by stretching out the sides of the fuselage.[36] After the advisory panel provisionally selected Convair’s_____( FISH design )____over the A-3 on the basis of RCS, Lockheed adopted chines for its A-4 through A-6 designs.[37]
Got this from wickapedia lve bracketed part of the above
Why?
The guy on the left is Gerry Vultee, one of the two brothers who founded Vultee Aviation parent company of ConVair. He and his bother Art besides being early aviators were also avid surfers and friends with Duke K.
This photo was taken a couple days after these guys and their surfboards rescued several people from a fishing boat that had broached at the mouth of Newport Harbor during a chubasco spawned huge swell.
Vultee and his Duke shaped Flying V at CDM
Im only spending 5 minute’s every second day on the shaping ,I find if im shaping my own board its to difficult to interpret what i want in the shape and im more satisfied with the finished job .
Allso I the tape measure gets left on shelf I find measurements are restrictive to creativity.
I can only ponder the similarities between surfing and flying i think a glider plane would be most like the sensation i get from surfing

i think a 7’11’’ might be even better…
Check out (and surf one if you can get your hands on) one of the McCoy Nugget designs in the 7’11’’ to 8’0’’ range. Single fin if you can find one.
The one in the photo is an adaptation for bigger waves. I broke my measured speed record on it by a wide margin.
I have a 7’6" nug hear im fixing a fin plug for a bloke, they do have a very flar rocker through the tail most likely the wide tail would help with speed and the slight role in the nose would help displacement of water when paddling.
From a brief amount of time i have riden one i found they surf great off the tail , hold speed real well but not the same squirt at take off or ability to slice over fat sloppy sections like a traditional fish can.
Im using some eliments from the mc coy
Started glassing today shedual. 2oz innegra 6oz s bottom, 6oz s 2oz inegra 6oz s deck patch 6oz s over with a large lap.
The temperature here is around 9 degree Celsius so the epoxy wont harden so i lam the board then I put it in a crudely made heat bag powerd by a little electric blow heater.
Its great glasing in low temp you can take all day to do it
Finished the lam stage this morning.
I did the top in 2 stages 6oz s deck patch with 6oz s cloth over not laping all the way around.
Then did 2oz inegra with 6oz s cloth wrapped around to a taped cut lap.
Shouldn’t get heal marks with this much reinforcement.
So far the glassing has cost 4 times the standard shedual.
By the use of epoxy i can afford to add more layers of reinforcement without adding to much weight.
3 weeks of epoxy glassing because of close to freezing temp finally got down a good gloss coat after sanding off 4 orange peal and pin hole attempts.
Hopefully in the morning its hard egnough th wet rub and polish, high tide is 3 pm so should allso get to surf it.
Cool! Thnx for sharing.
