Stand Up "Gondolas" in the Point Surf Zone

How do you all feel about these stand up boards at the most crowded Point Breaks?

Friends in Hawaii have been injured by them.

When I see them in a crowded Malibu line up, I get the same sinking feeling as I do when I’m next to a big rig going 85 on the freeway.

Sorry mate,

I’m not up on the millions of posts from Sway’s past. I’m just curious, and want current input on the topic.

I tend to Sway within the Hulls thread, "and there I’ll stay and there I’ll stay. "

Sorry if I have offended anyone out there in Swayland by rehashing an old topic.

Makes me think of vacations in Italy!!

it's about as far away as one can be from this

that needs to be posted at all major surf spots !!

please refer to the “if you require a paddle to surf” thread.

Jeff,

Your points are well taken, the beach breaks are crowded and unforgiving, but they have the advantage of having more then one focus for the waves and spreading out the crowds. 1st Point has one wave focus, thus destroying the “little equilibrium” that Mike suggests exists there.

In reality, there are few who are experts, and many who are not. Going back to my big rig analogy made in my original post, who would you rather be taken out by, the kook in the truck or the kook in the Civic?

The kook on the mat…oh wait, that wasn’t an option, cause LA outlaws mats…but not SUP’s. At least not yet. It has gotten much more frustrating to surf out at 1st point with the infestation of SUP’s, as if it wasn’t already difficult enough.

Brett, You put down the SUP guys yet you qoute Duke and use a picture of Duke for your avitar. If you knew about Duke you would know that he was the complete waterman and did stand up paddleing . Better you change your avitar to wilbur kookmyer !!! hehehe!!!! I surfed Malibu a few times in 1968 and there sure were a lot of kooks there then!! I can imagine what it is like now !!!

You’ve nailed it noleash…

as these days progress the wheat and chaff shall be winnowed .

the duly dillegent seekers of higher forms will become adept at riding

with the paddle as a tool, not to radiate the line up with toxicly unbalanced

attitudes but with indeed  enviable skills and compassionate attitudes.

Others, may we identify them as the chaff or perhaps refuse they quest to be

as un ethical. This leaves room for the higher ethic of stand paddling

to rise above the rabble of densely populated spots to far off less accessable

and more challenging venues. A boor by another name would smell as sweet.

Be it riding a bike or a sled or a political campagin. The attitudes of a

boor, a peasant or uncultured person; one who lacks in

education, knowledge, refinement and social graces

is what we aspire to rise above. The noble savage

of which surfing draws some of its historic apeal

is the residue of our most respected surfing Hawaiian

Named Duke Kahanamoku, The moment where the

oppertunity for another lacking in refinement and social graces

to step up the boorish one-upmanship  will indeed become

stage front and center with confrontations at every turn.

G-Bless all who choose to participate in this downward spiral.

A higher Ideal must be quested beyond Mop rule

or domination by anything other than skil and compassion

and understanding … the worst in us is just below the surface.

Given enough rope

even tied to a large

popout the greddy and unkind will

be their own demise.

as to the dora shove

it is important to lean on the inside rail

to provide enough resistance

keeping you from newtoning yourself.

(for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction)

…ambrose…

ethical stand paddling

catch one, paddle on to the next spot

ride the wave all the way from point A to

Point Z  … If you are hot …?

First of all there’s alot of great SUP surfers out there

I surf with a bunch of them and they were all the best longboarders in the lineup

They catch lot of waves but that’s because they paddle out faster

they also pay their dues getting hammered by their giant boards

but they share

the dangerous ones are chased away and told to go down the beach where there isn’t anyone to hurt if they can’t responsibly handle their equipment

the same would be said to a dangerous beginner on a longboard

also if you can surf and are on a smaller board you can have as much fun behind them spraying them and scaring them with close call cut backs

Secondly like they say in makaha

just go

who cares what any bad guy does

you just go and do your thing

if they don’t like it then keep doing it until they get the message that the ocean is for everyone

not just the “mine is bigger then yours” testoterone headed ones.

finally if things get out of hand

and paddles start flying

then take off your leash

aim and shoot your board

just make sure you let them know it’s gonna happen if they keep it up(bad behavior)

that video of miki was lame

he shot his board alot of times with perfect aim

we watched back then and we learned how to do it too in over crowded situations in the 70’s

also miki wasn’t any better than these SUP-punks either

he may have been the original surf punk

you can also cut cords if needed

SUPers and beginners without cords don’t last too long in the line up

Too much talk these days

too much crybaby complaining about this or that

makes me wonder if anyone is a real surfer these days

If they did they would just do the above without questioning if it was right or wrong

you can die or get hurt in the ocean for any reason at any time

thats the gamble you take when you paddle out away from the safety of the shore

what happened to all of us?

I know that this wouldn’t happen for long at my break

but then not that long ago we used to find dead bodies buried in the sand out here

you start worrying when you smell that “smell”

now adays its mostly beach punk trash and broken beer bottles

just like the lineup talk here i guess

its always someone’s elses job

to deal with the beach trash

so sad

last week on a day of decent size and waves of consequence, i saw a sup ass- whipe go ot and start dropping in on people, which , of course, is not cool. but the ultimate was when he wiped out right in front of the pack at take off zone. his board completely plowed through the group causing mayhem. friggin’ ridiculos and ultimately irresponsible and dangerous.

Last week I watched the typical “Gondola” snake, and as I pulled back from a justice snake, the offender swiped his paddle at me in a very offending matter.

Needless to say he got an earful.

The sad thing is these offences are why Kayaks and Surf Skis were banned from most beaches, the hazardous nature of the larger vehicle, and the paddle.  Sadly someone will be killed or maimed, and there will be a need for lawsuit, then the issue will be settled.

SUP's look fun - but they don't look like they belong in the lineup with prone paddling surfboards.  And honestly, they just don't look like a surfing vehicle to me.  Guess I'm old school on that count.  I'd like to try paddling around on one, 'tho, seems like it would be fun and a good workout.

It’s amazing the speed at which they are showing up in every lineup. More understandable at certain spots, but even the beach breaks are becoming littered with them. And unfortunately for the guys with respect, the others will ruin their ability to coexist in the lineup when, as mcmalibu pointed out, an irate constituent either brings a lawsuit or calls in a favor to his chum the congressman. I don’t ride one, but if I did, I’d be doing some major education to all the yahoos without any sense of what is proper in a lineup.

2010 - RIP SUP.
